Working in the Workouts

Making time to workout has been my biggest struggle, ever since having our first child. It’s hard to prioritize yourself as a mom, and even harder to find the time and energy to spend any free time you have exercising! As much as I love working out, and running, and lifting weights, it’s still tough to take that first step out the door. But, every.single.time I’m so glad I did! It’s always, always worth it. And after every workout, I find myself feeling so proud of myself and ready to conquer the world.

Now that I’ve got my little garage gym setup, (it’s REAL glamorous let me tell you!) I’m excited to start crushing my goals and get serious about getting back in shape. I have no excuses now not to walk out to the garage and squeeze in a workout because it’s literally too convenient now. I should also mention that we’re taking a big family beach vacation in August (the last time we were all there was 6 years ago!) and I want to feel confident and strong in my swimsuit!

I’ve been able to sneak in a few workouts since setting up my workout space, and I’m loving it so far! I’ll put on some music, open up the garage door to let the sunshine in, and get to town! I thought I’d hop on and recap how it’s been going and what I’ve been doing. Barrett has joined me for a few workouts in his bouncer, and Adeline has even gotten in on the action. She says ‘the purple ones’ are hers (3 lb purple dumbbells) and she loves pretending to exercise alongside me. Sometimes she gets a little demanding though, “Mommy, I said do the yellow ones next!” *Wipes brow, yes ma’am!* I also set her up in the wagon with a show and a snack at hand while baby brother napped inside one time and she loved that! Anything to make it happen, right?

So I’ve been focusing on weights, bodyweight exercises, running 3 miles a couple times a week, and taking at least one long walk. 3 miles is slowly getting easier, and I’m having to walk less and less, which is encouraging. In the weights department, I’m definitely starting from scratch, but I can feel my strength coming back rather quickly – probably because I’ve been hauling around an 18 lb baby in a 10 lb carseat! Ha! Bodyweight exercises though, are kicking.my.butt. I did 20 burpees the other day and practically had to peel myself up off the mat like a squished bug. That stuff is HARD. It’s amazing how it doesn’t feel like a big deal to jump back into lifting free weights, but lifting yourself, a self that weighs quite a bit more than you’re used to, is tough! Talk about a reality check, man. Whew!

I’m already itching to add a few heavier weights to my collection, and I’d still like to find a bosu ball and an adjustable bench. For now though, my little garage gym is just right. It’s like a little sanctuary. Both a stress relieving sanctuary and one that causes much, much soreness!

Some of the exercises I’ve been getting back into include:

  • Bicep curls
  • Overhead tricep extensions
  • Forward lateral raises
  • Upright rows
  • Overhead press
  • Donkey kicks
  • Burpees
  • Kettlebell swings
  • Weighted lunges
  • Goblet squats
  • Weighted bridge
  • Weighted oblique side bends
  • Russian twists
  • Side lying leg lifts

I still miss my gym time though because that was always my favorite way to truly have ‘me time.’ But for this current season in life, I still haven’t figured out a way to make it work, and be sustainable. So instead of getting frustrated, and giving up, the garage home gym was born!

Even after just a handful of workouts recently, I’ve already begun craving more exercise. Exercise is absolutely addictive, and I’m excited to have it back in my life on the reg!

What’s your favorite exercise to do at home? What’s your favorite bodyweight exercise?

I want to add a bosu ball and a spin bike. I think it’d be fun to have! I have a little step I just got from Aldi for $6! And dumbbells, TRX, resistance bands, kettlebells, treadmill, and step box and slamball. I forgot about that slam ball, lol. I remember it causing some extreme soreness 😉 Your gym is just right! I am exctied for you to get back into it. You’re doing a great job! I laugh but I seriously think my big kids are what gave me my muscles!

I am also a mom of two and have been loving Beachbody on Demand. In all honesty, I am a coach. However, it has truly been life changing to workout at home and to have access to so many workouts right at my finger tips. I’m now able to workout for 30 minutes, about 5-6 times per week before my kids wake up in the morning. My husband leaves for work super early, so the gym was no longer happening. Now, I can workout while they are sleeping without worry about driving in these frigid temps. Only issue I have now is making sure that I am showered and ready for work before they wake up. It’s a constant game of beat the clock.
