The Final Countdown: Spoiling Our First Born

Yep, you read that correctly. Our first born has technically not been born yet, but our OTHER first born certainly has! If you’re a long time blog reader then you know that Truckee has been our pride and joy for the past 3 years. She is just as much a part of our family as either Adam or I are, and we love that silly labrador so much! I think sometimes she needs us just as much as we need her!

Now that it’s almost time for us to bring a NEW family member into the mix (2 weeks or less, eek!), we’ve been trying to make an extra effort to show Truckee how much we love her and hopefully show her that we won’t abandon her once baby girl gets here. It always breaks my heart to hear stories of families who “don’t have time for the dog anymore” or “the dog just doesn’t get any attention anymore”. I know she probably won’t get as much attention as she has in the past, but I truly hope to still include her in our family activities and make sure she and Adeline form a special bond right from the start. I grew up with pets as well, and have so many childhood memories stemming from our furry family members.

We’ve been spending any extra time we get showering Truckee will love, trying to familiarize her with Adeline’s name by saying it out loud around her a lot, letting her slowly sniff out the nursery, giving her extra treats, making sure she still gets plenty of playtime in the midst of all our baby prep, and making arrangements for friends to help take care of her when the big day finally arrives. For so long now it’s just been the three of us, and I know bringing home a baby isn’t just going to be an adjustment for us, but also for Truckee.

She’s been the official third wheel since right after we got married, and has made her presence known in most all of our family portraits. They say having a dog is a great way for couples to “practice” what it’s like having kids. I remember when we adopted Truckee, we had just bought our home, and everyone was sure to comment on how the next logical step was a baby! She definitely taught me and Adam a lot about how we both deal with certain situations, how to share a big responsibility, and how to compromise on “raising” her. Not to mention how we both handle stressful situations like when she wakes us up puking in the middle of the night! (I have a feeling we’re about to experience that again, but way worse, ha!)

In preparation for baby, a friend of ours actually gifted us a FREE one year membership to Sam’s Club. Talk about a thoughtful gift! Well, we finally took a day to stroll through Sam’s and make a mental list of things we’d want to purchase from there in bulk. We checked out diapers, wipes, Dreft, meat, toiletries, halloween candy (blame the baby), snacks for our work lunches, and finally, dog food.

For the month of October, whenever a PEDIGREE® product is purchased from Sam’s club, they will give a bowl of dog food to a dog in need. (If that doesn’t warm your heart as much as it warmed ours, you must be a cat person.) We just couldn’t pass up the chance to help some pups out, while also spoiling Truckee a little as well. Since we’re anxiously awaiting the baby, we’ve been trying to make sure Truckee is all set with plenty of food and treats for when we have to jet off to the hospital. We opted for the PEDIGREE® Adult Dry Dog Food – 55lb bag, and I’d imagine this will feed her for a while! When we brought it home, I thought Truckee was going to turn herself inside out over it. It was like Christmas morning!

Needless to say, Truckee is feeling the love. Every chance I get, I whisper into her ear how much I love her and that I’m going to do my best to make sure she doesn’t feel too left out once baby sister gets here.

If you’d like to share the love as well, you can upload a photo of the dog you love to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #LaterShelter for a chance to be featured on SamsClub.com. The PEDIGREE® brand will donate a bowl of food for every upload!

While you’re at it, Be sure to check out more heartfelt stories on the Pedigree social hub. I’d love to hear about your favorite pet!

What a great story. Black labs are the most loyal dog, I had one growing up and she was my best friend. I would love to have a dog, however I already know that it would be too much stress, so I make sure to refrain from anyplace that may have dogs to adopt or need a home. I think that a lot of people get dogs on impulsiveness, then realize the amount of work they are. So they get “rid” of them in one way or another. What you are doing is so amazing. Thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful doggy! Don’t worry, you will find time to give him lots of attention. Your love for him won’t go away.

Before my daughter was born I had so many people tell me I wouldn’t love my dog as much any more. Very glad to report that is not at all true!
How did you pick the name Truckee? It reminds me of Lake Tahoe (one of my favorite places)!

You hit the nail on the head. We honeymooned in Tahoe and on our drive in (along side the Truckee River) we thought that Truckee would be a great name for a dog. Skip forward about five months and we find a black lab puppy that wandered over to us and fell asleep in my arms. The peaceful and serene Truckee River was now embodied in a little puppy and it fit perfectly.
