One of the things I’ve been doing since getting back into running is going through my running drawer and seriously paring down my attire, then working on replacing items I’ve had for a decade+ with new, high-quality pieces. Has anyone else been holding onto the SAME Nike Tempo shorts they’ve had since high school? Like, I’m talking circa 2004? 2005? I’m not kidding – I can remember playing lacrosse games in high school and wearing some of these shorts under my skirt! Needless to say, now that I’m umm, 31 years old it’s time to let them go! I think I can afford an upgrade now! So, let’s get started!
There are definitely certain things I look for in my running clothes and I’m honestly pretty picky. I also think I’m a little boring when it comes to colors and patterns and Adam always jokes that it looks like I’m headed to a funeral. While I love bright colors and fun patterns, they have to be the right colors and patterns and I tend to gravitate towards pretty neutral colored items, or at the very least incorporating just one ‘bright’ or ‘busy’ item in an outfit at a time. Like, Adam could walk out the door in head-to-toe neon running clothes but I’d be right next to him in black shoes, black socks, a grey or white tank, and maybe some semi-fun colored shorts. HA I know, lame-o over here.
Fit-wise, I’m all about loose fitting but not too loose fitting, moisture wicking, and flattering. I also prefer shorts that of course have a liner, and are a 3-4″ length, depending on the brand. Sometimes 3″ can feel too short, and 5″ usually feels way too long. A few of the more expensive brands I love are Athleta and Lululemon, and on the other end of the budget spectrum would be My Protein, Joy Lab at Target, and Old Navy. Oh, and Under Armour. I actually muuuuuch prefer Under Armour over Nike – I actually HATE the way most Nike items fit me and it’s very rare I find a Nike top I like that also fits me correctly.
Ok so here are my current favorites – some I have and some I WANT, as well as some fun bonus wish list items.
Athleta Printed Mesh Racer Run Short 4″ – I have these in both olive camo and the solid black! I would love the black camo as well! I swear up and down that these are my favorite shorts of all time!
Joy Lab Tank Top in Heather Gray – LOVE this tank. It is so, so soft and I’d love to pick it up in another color. Joy Lab is probably my favorite activewear brand at Target. All their items are super soft and I’ve never been disappointed.
Lululemon Energy Bra Medium Support in Dark Prism Pink – I haven’t owned a Lulu sports bra in several years but I’ve had my eye on this one for quite some time! I love the color options, the support, and the straps in the back.
My Protein Essentials Training Escape Vest in Rosewater – I always say that My Protein is my favorite hidden gem of fitness attire. I have a few different pieces and love all of them! I have a very similar tank top in white, and really love the grey version but in an effort to be a little more fun I’d be willing to snag the pink color!
Lululemon Tracker Short V 4″ in Black – Back in the day, my favorite running shorts were Lulus, but then I had two babies and now my hips can’t fit into them. SO, I’ve got it on my lift to order a new pair! These Tracker shorts are perfect, and I’m dying to get my hands on them.
Old Navy Lightweight Racerback Performance Tank – I actually have two of these cheaper tanks from Old Navy and love them. They’re your basic thin, flowy racerback tank and I especially am loving this black stripe version!
My Protein Essentials Training Sports Bra – This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE SPORTS BRA! I have TWO of this exact same bra in black, and wear them multiple times a week. I don’t see the black in stock right now, but I’d love to pick up the white sometime. It’s very, very similar to the Lulu sports bra I posted above, but quite a bit cheaper!
Lululemon Wunder Under High Rise Tight Full-On Luxtreme in Black – I know, $98 for leggings sounds lit-er-a-lly insane. But hear me out! I have THREE of these and have had them since 2013-2014 and they’re all going strong. I have two pairs of crops and one full length pair and LOVE THEM. I’ve gotten so much use out of them, both running, strength training, biking, walking, wearing casually, etc. They are the BEST.
Target All in Motion Mid-Rise Run Shorts 3″ in Gray – This was actually a fun surprise. I really haven’t found anything I love from the new All in Motion brand at Target other than this exact pair of shorts. I bought them in the red/coral color on a whim and I actually really, really like them! They’ve been a great cheap alternative to my old Nike Tempos I’ve been slowly replacing!
Lululemon Uplifting Scrunchie – I know, $8 for a single scrunchie once again sounds insane but I’ve discovered that scrunchies are the ONLY way to keep my ponytail from completely falling down during a run! I’d be willing to invest in a fun Lulu scrunchie and I’m really loving this ballet slipper color! Eeeek!
Athleta Hustle 3″ Link – I tried these on in the store and really liked them! Now, I liked the Mesh Racers MORE but I’d be willing to also invest in these if I had a little extra spending money!
Athleta Ultimate Stash Pocket Camo 7/8 Tight – I mentioned I have the Mesh Racer shorts in the olive green camo pattern, and I AM DYING OVER THESE CAMO GREEN LEGGINGS! This will be the first cool weather item I buy!
Athleta Uptempo Top in Norwegian Gray – OBSESSED. That hemline and those monkey holes AHH this makes me excited about cooler weather. This top would be perrrrfect.
Athleta Uptempo Hoodie Sweatshirt – Similar to the top above, this sweatshirt is actually super lightweight and could be worn year ’round. And naturally I’m obsessed with the grey.
Lululemon Essential Tank Pleated – Eeeeek this one is so, so cute. It’s a bit expensive for me for a tank top but I really do love it!
Under Armour Fly By 2.0 Shorts in Lipstick/Beta – Also back in the day, I had and still do actually, a pair of neon green Under Armour shorts and they’ve always been a favorite of mine. I prefer the fit of them over Nike Tempos and I’ve been itching to find another pair one soon!
I know this was long, but I truly believe that if you feel good while working out and feel confident in what you’re wearing, you’ll stick to it. There’s nothing worse than working out and hating what you’re wearing or feeling uncomfortable. Hopefully some of these items inspire you to treat yo self girl to some high-quality pieces that will help you get your sweat on!
