When we first bought our house, one of the things I knew I’d want to do eventually would be to update the kitchen. Maybe not so much update, but restyle? Redo? Make it our own? However you slice it, I knew I’d want to make some changes! And here we are, 3 years later and we’re just now starting to brainstorm some ideas and seriously start planning for it. Our kitchen as it stands today isn’t terrible, it’s just not totally our style. In a perfect world, we would have had a little more time to find a house with a different style kitchen, but it just wasn’t a priority at the time because we knew if we could find good bones, all other changes were just cosmetic.
So, there are really only two major changes we’re hoping to make: new countertops and backsplash. (Three I guess if you count the sink.) We’ve already switched out the faucet (PRAISE THE LORD!) and all of our appliances are stainless. Our cabinets are a dark espresso brown, and we’ve decided to leave them as-is. They go really well with the feel of the house, both inside and out, and we just don’t think white cabinets would feel quite right. All of the vanities in the house and our banister is espresso brown too, so I think it would drive me nuts having them mis-matched. Plus, having cabinets painted is crazy expensive and with two kids and a dog, white cabinets (in our house at least!) would get destroyed pretty quickly.
I think I’ve landed on a style that I really like, and now it just comes down to figuring out the logistics, i.e. the cost, the installation, the process? I literally have no idea how any of this renovation stuff works so we’re really flying blind at the moment! We’ve gotten a rough estimate from a family member who did something similar, and we think we can do granite countertops, a subway tile backsplash, and a new sink for under $3K, at least that is my hope! Our kitchen isn’t huge, and we’re fine using a cheaper granite. The subway tile we want is the most basic of basic white subway tile, and we just want a simple stainless farmhouse sink. (TBD on the sink, not sure we can fit a farmhouse style sink so we may settle for a divided sink again, which would be fine!)
After scouring Pinterest for inspiration, I’m reallllllly loving the look of dark cabinets with white/grey countertops and white subway tile with a darker grout. It looks SO pretty and would make our kitchen look so modern and fresh! I also currently have jute kitchen rugs, so I love the idea of adding in some countertop accessories to tie in the natural wood and rustic feel.
What do you think?! I really like it, and I am DYING to get the show on the road! Although realistically we’re probably thinking more like Christmas time! HA! Never too soon to dream and start saving!
See below for some photos of our kitchen when we FIRST moved in back in 2017. Lots has changed since (new faucet, coffee bar/open shelves, breakfast nook table, rugs, curtains, white trim under the bar), but this will give you an idea of what our cabinets, countertops, and backsplash currently look like despite that. Our walls are ‘Light French Grey’ by Sherwin Williams, though in the photos below they don’t quite translate accurately because of the lighting.
The countertops are an ugly brown laminate and the backsplash is the same beige tile as the floor. WHY builders do this is beyond me, but I can’t stand it! I think lightening up the countertops and the backsplash will do WONDERS in here, and in contrast with our newly painted white fireplace and updated light fixtures, I really think it will look so good!
SO, you tell me! How do we go about this process? Do we get estimates from places like Home Depot and Lowe’s? Do we look for a contractor or something? Do we go to a granite store? TELL ME ALL THE THINGS!
