How was your weekend? It’s been gorgeous here, and finally feels like summer is right around the corner. Yesterday I raced in the Toad Suck 10k, and had a blast! I was very pleased with the event overall, and came out with a PR, and some fancy tan lines.
Friday night I got everything together, and realized I haven’t raced since my last 10k in mid-March! It always makes me nervous I’ll forget something, so making a pile the night before helps. I really thought about running with my water bottle, but I knew there would be two good water stops, so instead I just took it with me for before and after. I used a packet of my InRefresh Ignite Naturals Electrolytes, and also threw a couple Power Bar Energy Blasts into my wrist band.
And then it was race day!
Toad Suck 10K in Conway, AR
The weather was perfect! But, definitely a lot warmer than I had anticipated. I’m not completely used to running in the heat yet, so I was glad I wore a tank top because it got hot, fast! I’m also pretty sure I got too much sun, because the rest of the afternoon I was exhausted!
The course this year was much flatter than last year, but there were tons of turns, and I felt like I was running in a maze. The 10k and 5k had a 15 minute staggered start, which was great, but towards the end of the race, the courses merged together and I spent most of my last mile weaving in and out of the 5k walkers. I was not a fan of this layout, so hopefully they fix this for next year! Other than this though, I loved the course, and enjoyed running through more of a residential part of town.
I started off strong, but eventually the heat caught up to me. Whew, running into the sun is no joke, ya’ll!
Mile 1- 8:27
Mile 2- 8:28
Mile 3- 8:43
Mile 4- 8:41
Mile 5- 8:57
Right around this time I was dying for some water, but knew there wasn’t going to be anymore until the finish. Yikes!
Mile 6- 8:34
The last ~.2 are around the track at the high school stadium, and it’s always so encouraging to finish hard! There were tons of people around the track, waiting for their friends and family to finish, and right after I finished I met up with Adam. So glad he was able to come support!
Official chip time: 53:38
8th in my age group
533 total 10k runners
591 total 5k runners
I’m pretty pleased with my splits, but know mile 5 is what got me. If it had been closer to my goal pace like the other miles, I would have at least finished in 52:00 something. Oh well! Still a PR, so I’m happy! I told Adam before I started that as long as I beat my PR of 54:01, I’d call it a success!
The race’s shirts are probably the highlight of the event. They’re tech-tees, made by New Balance. The best part? The registration fee for this race is only $25!
And in case you missed last week’s post on what to do with your old race bibs, you guys left some great ideas!
Did you race this weekend? How did it go? Do you have any races coming up?
