9 In Daily Run

to give a dog a shower…

I knew today was going to be my last day really running hard before Saturday’s 5K so I wanted to make sure I made good time and had negative splits! I headed to the gym since it was a sweltering 97 degrees. Not really ideal in my book, at least not for running! If I were laying out by the pool, like I dream of doing all day long in my cubicle, ah it would be fabulous. But alas, I headed to my little hole-in-the-wall gym as I like to call it and hopped on the treadmill.

I opted for no headphones this time to get ready for Saturday. Poor choice, won’t do that again. Bor-ing. I started with an 8:21 mile, then bumped it up to 8:06 for mile 2. Mile 3 I played with a little- I set it on 7:41 pace and did a half mile on a 3 incline, then the second half mile back normal. I need to start adding in more hills to my workouts, especially after the hilliest 5K of my life, so I figured throwing one in towards the end when I was tired would be good practice!  It was, and my sweat level when I was done was thru the roof. Success!

When I got home, I had already promised Truckee I would take her on a walk/run so we set out as soon as I pulled in the driveway! We probably only did a mile, AT MOST, but she did GREAT!! I was so proud of her! She only veered off in the grass ONCE, and then actually ran up the hill! She’s such a little personal trainer at heart. When we get to a big hill for some reason she wants to run up it so she’ll run a step ahead of me and constantly look over her shoulder to make sure I’m coming. Going down hill is another story, sometimes I have to tell her to put the breaks on and I don’t let her run a step ahead because I don’t ever want her to accidentally pull me down! Silly girl, she’s a champ. When we got back to the house, she was one thirsty pup!

Sometimes I worry about her dehydrating so fast because she will drink TWO bowls full usually! And by drink, I mean she’ll stick her whole head in the water up to her eyes and slosh the water around everywhere. Hence her new “placemat.” I thought it was adorable, though a little cheesy. However, it’s technically an outdoor doormat so the water soaks right up! Lately we had noticed she had been dripping so much water that it was staining our hardwoods. So when I came across this “woof” mat at Target I had to get it! Silly me to think it would actually solve our problem. The problem does not lie in failure to catch the water beneath her bowl, but it lies in the oversized jowls of a 70 lb dog that hasn’t learned how to keep her mouth shut post-gulp. It’s like slow motion. She goes in for a big gulp, picks up her head, turns it at lightning speed, and the water that was once in her mouth then is propelled onto the floor, feet away from her bowl. Maybe one day we’ll find a decorative way to solve this problem. So for now, don’t inspect the hardwoods by the backdoor too closely.

Later tonight we decided it was about time for a shower. Remember when I told the vet that she really prefers showers over baths? I wasn’t kidding! Our shower just happens to be big enough for a baby elephant so Truckee seems to fit quite nicely. Her rump smelt suspiciously like urine this afternoon when we got home, so that needed to be nipped in the bud before bedtime tonight! I hope she isn’t too embarrassed that I’m posting this…I would be.

To give a dog a shower, it takes a village.

Her coat soaks up half a bottle of shampoo at a time, and to dry her off requires approximately 4 towels and a hairdryer set on high. And a bag of salmon treats.

Thankfully when she’s in the shower, it’s like she’s in a trance (see above photo) and she happily enjoys her full body massage.

I know I know, ridiculous.

But we wouldn’t have it any other way 🙂

Does your dog drink a TON of water after a short run? What about just throughout the day? I think we just have a heavy drinker on our hands!

Oh my goodness, the pup in the shower, too cute!!

I can’t show my dogs, they’re horrified that they have to get their baths on the back porch 🙂

Kristin- thanks for the comment!! That’s so funny…I think if our dog continues to get bigger she very well might end up on the back porch as well!

My dog does the same thing and drains her water dish a few times over after a long/hot run. I’ve got a little water dish I keep in my car to give her water in if we hit up the park b/c I’m so afraid she’ll get dehydrated.

Kelsey- That’s a great idea! I keep seeing the cutest little “travel bowls” at petsmart and target, and I just need to buy one already! Great idea for keeping water nearby!

That sounds like a great run! I don’t know how people run without music though. I’m like a wind-up a toy, when the music stops, so do i 🙂 and omg truckee is SO CUTE sitting in the shower, awww that face!

Your dog is absolutely adorable. And I completely agree – it takes a village to bathe a dog. Your dog is so much better about baths than mine. Luckily he is small, otherwise I might loose a body part.

Great blog! looking forward to keeping up with your journey

I tried running without music one time. It was over in about 6 minutes (I’m not kidding). Your dog is so precious. She’s mastered the “sad-dog” face in that shower pic!

Kelly- Thanks! HAHA 6 minutes!! That is pretty bad. The treadmill though is not exactly entertaining so I can’t blame you one bit!
