It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of Beautycounter’s skincare line, and feel passionate about using safer products on my face and body. But what I haven’t talked about too much yet is their makeup! I’m not exactly a huge makeup person, and prefer basic staples that I can use day in and day out for a natural, simple look. I really only wear makeup on church days, date days, or days when I have several video meetings, so I just don’t need a lot of bells and whistles. I’ve found Beautycounter’s Flawless in Five to be the perfect easy and quick makeup routine for me, and it’s made feeling put together as a busy mom a breeze. And it takes 5 minutes or less. WIN!
One of the first things I started switching out when I started pursuing safer products was my makeup. Makeup can be notoriously ‘dirty’ when it comes to its ingredients, and it won’t take much research or googling to find article after article citing harmful and toxic ingredients and their associated health risks. (Hello hormone disruptors and carcinogens!) Knowing that our skin is our largest organ, and that the skin on our face can be especially sensitive, it just makes sense to be extra cautious with what we pile on it everyday. Besides, we only get one face, and I’m determined to take care of it and respect it. I also love my babies fiercely, and am constantly rubbing my face on them when I smother them in hugs and kisses. The last thing I want is for my makeup to rub off on them by default and transfer over yucky ingredients to their precious, delicate skin. Not to mention the fact that it seems like every time I turn around, Adeline is digging through my makeup bag again!
Knowing what I know now about the hidden dangers in makeup, I’m not sure I could ever go back to carelessly using drugstore makeup on a whim. It’s just not worth it. I can never unlearn what I’ve now learned, and with the clean beauty movement in full swing, I have a feeling many of you have also begun to question what’s in your makeup. It’s not a fad, and it’s not a trend, it’s simply a truth that’s finally being told. With so many safer options at our disposal, it seems silly to continue using products we now know could be harmful. (Check out the EWG’s Skin Deep Database if you’re curious how your current products rank or check out this Facebook post.)
I get it though, it’s HARD to break habits and safer products often come at a premium, so it’s not like it’s cheap to suddenly ‘come clean’ with your makeup. But know that you do get what you pay for, and safer products are often more expensive because of the time it takes to source safe ingredients, and the research and quality control it takes to maintain that level of safety. (You guys, think about why a McDonalds cheeseburger is 1000% cheaper than an organic grass-fed locally raised beef burger.) I’ll be the first to admit that the biggest reason I haven’t switched out all of my products to safer options yet is simply because it can quickly get expensive! Slowly and deliberately though, I’m switching things out. I’m in no rush, but it is a priority of mine over time. I’ve always got a cart-full of Beautycounter wants – like the Hand Wash in Citrus Mimosa and Body Wash in Citrus Mimosa!
There are lots of great ‘clean’ beauty brands out there, doing lots of great work alongside Beautycounter. So if Beautycounter isn’t your thing, know that there are other options out there. However, not all ‘clean’ brands are created equal and you’ll be hard pressed to find another beauty brand that truly has your health and safety at heart. Beautycounter prides itself on banning over 1,500 potentially harmful ingredients, and “screens every potential ingredient for 23 health and safety endpoints, including information on specific hazards like cancer, developmental toxicity, hormone disruption, and infertility.” And, over 80% of the ingredients in BC products are natural or plant-derived.
Anyways, back to Flawless in Five! FIF is basically Beautycounter’s makeup starter kit. It’s the easiest way to dip your toes in Beautycounter’s makeup line, and quickly switch out your makeup staples! I’ve been using the FIF products for 3 years now and with the occasional cheap eyeliner (on my list to switch out!) and bareMinerals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder it’s all I use! So if you’re looking to cleanup your current makeup routine, Beautycounter’s Flawless in Five is a great place to start!
The Flawless in Five ($150) comes with 6 high-performing products, and I use 5 out of the 6 products every single time I put on makeup. I don’t do anything to my brows (though maybe I should??) so I don’t actually use the brow pencil or brow gel product though, but those who do love it!
The 6 products Flawless in Five comes with (and you can customize it to pick your shades) are:
- Tint Skin Foundation (I use linen)
- Touchup Skin Concealer Pen (I use light)
- Color Define Brow Pencil or Brow Gel
- Lengthening or Volumizing Mascara (I use Volumizing)
- Satin Powder Blush (I use Nectar)
- Lip Gloss (I use Bare Shimmer or Peony)
I filmed myself applying my own Flawless in Five over on my BC Facebook page, which you can check out HERE. Pro quality, let me tell ya! Ha!
And here’s a before/after, though I feel like it doesn’t really do it justice.
If you need help picking your shades, or have questions, feel free to ask! To learn more about FIF and to purchase one for yourself, you can check it out HERE. You’ll be able to walk through a super easy module where you will select your shades and products to fully customize your look.
Between mommin’ two young kiddos, working a full time job, loving a husband, maintaining a blog, working out, and staying involved within our church, some weeks I feel like I barely have time to pee, let alone spend more than five minutes on my makeup! Living a healthy and active lifestyle for me, includes not just running and eating a (somewhat) decent diet, but also taking care of my body in other ways, including what I put on it.
Beautycounter actually just ended a great promotion to coincide with the FIF (a free retractable makeup brush with purchase of the FIF) so I’m a bit late to the party on that one, ha! BUT, their latest promo which began yesterday is a free Cleansing Balm with a $175 purchase! The Cleansing Balm is good stuff, you guys! It’s a multi-taster that basically does all the things – it’s a mask, a makeup remover, a moisturizer, a cleanser, just to name a few of its uses! It’s one of our most expensive products, so now is a great time to try it out for free alongside a fresh makeup routine.

Next week I’ll be diving deeper into Beautycounter’s skincare collections, and what exactly they all mean. Stay tuned!
