My First Postpartum Workout at the Gym

You. Guys.

I have the best husband in the entire world. Let me just brag for a second. Last night he came home from work, insisted on him watching the baby so I could go enjoy some time at the gym, AND he made a delicious dinner when I came home. BOOM. Wednesday made! Let me explain.

I hadn’t ventured back to the gym since before Adeline arrived, and the last time I did go to the gym was for a short walk around the 30 week mark. I’ve been super nervous about going back, and a little intimidated. I used to feel like the gym was MY place, and I always super at ease and at home there. But since having a baby and feeling like I’ve completely lost any and all physical shape I was in, as well as a little bit of confidence if we’re being honest, I have definitely been dragging my feet when it came to actually going back! I also felt a little bit guilty for wanting to leave Adeline for some alone time at the gym to work on ME, but I know that sounds like a silly thought. Mommy guilt is real and something I don’t think you can understand until you yourself are a mom. I sure never did, I always thought it was new moms being overly dramatic about not wanting to leave their babies, wah wah wah. But no, it’s real, and it has made sneaking off to the gym difficult.

Last night though, and with Adam’s encouragement, (and a sleepy cooperative baby) I took that first step and WENT TO THE FREAKING GYM. Hallelujah. The angels rejoiced. Here’s how it all went down…

First stop: the bike.

The bike was always my absolute favorite way to sneak in some solid cardio as well as leg toning and cross training without having to step on the treadmill. I’m convinced all of the biking I did before the WDW Marathon is what helped save my butt. Anyways, since I wanted to not over-do it at first, I hopped on the bike, and rode my little heart out. Literally. There was a little bit of huffing and puffing, maybe a few swear words in the back of my mind as I tried to remind myself that, “self, you haven’t moved like this in 10 months, give yourself a break!”, and a whole lot of water drinking. I kind of wished I could wear a sign on my back that read, JUST HAD A BABY DON’T JUDGE ME, because we all know we secretly judge whoever is next to or in front of us on the cardio equipment.

I actually ended up feeling great, and surprisedΒ myself at how much resistance I was able to keep up with. I stayed on for 35 minutes and knocked out 6.41 miles. I basically felt like super-mom.

Next stop: the aaaaaabdominal corner.

Adam convinced me to try a few ab exercises before coming home, of which I was super nervous about. Remember that time I had a baby and my abs were literally ripped apart and now no longer exist? I do, and doing ab exercises reminded me of that fun fact.

I started off with a measly 6 pound medicine ball. Sounds easy right? WRONG. I sat down to try out some medicine ball twists (the ones where you sit with your knees bent and feet off the ground and you rotate side to side) and just laughed out loud after I tried ONE. ONE. I eventually managed to do five, but it was definitely a fail and slightly hilarious. Next time maybe I can do six.

Next I tried to do some crunches on the yoga ball. This was a little more successful and I was able to do twelve. I was pretty darn proud of my first dozen crunches. It amazed me too how it wasn’t necessarily my now-single-ab that hurt, but other supporting muscles hurt more. All in good time will everything become strong again, and I can’t wait!

Finally, I tried the bosu ball. I did two 30-second planks and called it a night.

Even if I only did a few ab exercises, it was a step in the right direction! Yay!!

And on my way out, I took a locker room selfie to prove it happened.

When I got home, Adam had Adeline sound asleep in her swaddle, all baby burrito style. It’s the sweetest sight seeing your husband love on your daughter. I am so thankful he offered to watch her for a while so I could get out!

For dinner, he whipped up fajita tacos, and they were all sorts of amazing!! Lettuce, tomato, black beans, grilled chicken, grilled onions, and grilled red and green peppers.

I scarfed them down with one hand while I nursed the little one because that’s just how dinner time goes these days!

Happy Thursday! Adeline is 8 weeks old today. Cue the tears!!!

So incredibly proud of you friend! I haven’t been to the gym yet since Jack was born (3 months ago today!!), and before that not since the 36 week mark. Since I’ve been sick, it’s tough to find a routine, but I am looking forward to weaning myself back into exercise again – for both my physical and mental health!

Congrats mama! You look SUPER AWESOME! I mean that. I know how super not awesome postpartum makes you feel, but taking those first steps is huge. My first PP run (pp run lol), I was like on cloud nine that I could even run after a 6+ month break!

Abs totally sucks post baby. Well, at least it did for me. My abs separated and I had a weak core before I got pregnant so I just wasn’t set up for success. I do abs stuff ALL the time. I am slowly seeing an improvement but I had wait a lonnng time before I could do anything bc of the separation. So much fun! It all comes back a lot sooner than you think, but at the same time takes work too.

I have no idea how she is 8 weeks already… I feel like she was born yesterday. But I also say this about my 8 month old! Ah!
