My Current Fitness Journey: What I’m Doing + Small Changes

I’ve had a few people reach out and ask me what fitness program I’m following, or what plan I’m on. And the short answer is – my own! But to be completely honest, I’ve NEVER liked group fitness classes, working out in a group of people, running with a group of people, following a workout plan, being told exactly what to do on a specific day, etc. Things like Beachbody, BBG, Tone It Up, P90X just don’t appeal to me, and I’ve never been interested. I guess maybe it’s just a part of my type 3 personality, and my inner competitor and will to do it all myself, but I’ve always been much more inclined to create my own workouts and fly solo. I think a lot of marathon runners probably feel the same way – when you’re a super disciplined and goal oriented person, and really know how your body responds to fitness in general, crafting your own workouts is actually really enjoyable.

I thought I would share some of my favorite at-home exercises that I’ve been doing over the past 6 months, since I’ve really gotten more serious about getting back into shape. I also wanted to share a few small changes I’ve been making. I’ve said it about 1,000 times already, but investing in some simple gym equipment/staples to keep in our garage, and creating my own little exercise space, has been LIFE CHANGING. And, worth every.single.penny. I could go on and on about how great this has been, and how much I LOVE my little garage gym. Bonus, not only is it a place designated for ME, but it also keeps our garage more organized! Ha! Anytime anything starts to infringe upon my workout space – mama makes sure to clean it up! My little 6 square mat is practically holy ground these days. (If you’re interested in a list of my current must-haves, I can put one together!)

If you’re not as motivated as I am to workout individually, or don’t have the knowledge or desire to put together your workout, it can feel daunting coming up with exercises, for sure. I’m not a personal trainer, or any sort of fitness professional, but after years of being very active, training for marathons, and growing up playing sports, I do feel comfortable in this realm. But, there is nothing wrong with YouTube’ing a new exercise, or googling the proper way to do something or a modification, or going on Pinterest for inspiration to get you started! I do this all the time, especially when I start feeling bored or feel like I need to incorporate something new into my workouts.

Just don’t judge the rest of our garage, ah! I didn’t say it was pretty! These two photos are horrible but that’s what happens when you workout after the littles go to bed!

Here are my current favorite exercises you would most likely walk in on me doing in the garage! These are all exercises you can do at home, with minimal equipment. My favorite equipment I use almost every time I workout are my dumbbells, ranging from 5 lb up to 30 lb, my bench, and my kettlebells, most often a 15 lb. And of course, my mat that helps designate that space and create a little bit of padding.

Arms:

  • Curls
  • Overhead tricep extension
  • Overhead press
  • Upward standing row
  • Forward raises
  • Lateral raises
  • Elevated pushup
  • Bench dips
  • Hammer curls to overhead press
  • Dumbbell bench press
  • Farmer’s walks
  • Lawnmower row
  • Bent-over reverse fly

Legs:

  • Walking weighted lunges
  • Squat to kicks
  • Goblet squats
  • Power hooks
  • Bench step ups, weighted
  • Rear foot elevated split squat
  • Lateral step downs
  • Elevated lunges, weighted
  • Kettlebell swings

Core + Glutes:

  • Russian twists
  • Bicycle
  • Weighted bridge
  • Side bends
  • Lateral donkey kicks
  • Donkey kicks
  • Bench squat jumps
  • Mountainclimbers

And honestly you guys, when I’m putting together my workout, 75% of the time I just wing it and tell myself to just keep moving for 40 minutes, or however long I have to workout. Just keep moving. Just keep sweating. Just keep pushing myself. Don’t stop until you can’t do anymore. Just. Keep. Going. And then the other 25% of the time, I’ll actually write out my workout and know ahead of time what I’m going to do. I love either listening to a podcast, music, or lately, catching up on a show like Bachelor in Paradise or Handmaid’s Tale. I just wanted to encourage you that you don’t HAVE to buy into an expensive fitness program, class, mlm, subscription, whatever, to see results. I know what it means to be a busy mom. Trust me, I KNOW! And I know how impossible it can feel to not only carve out a few minutes to work out, but to workout without feeling guilty. But at the end of the day, no one is going get healthy and strong for you. You’ve got to be strong for your kids and you are the only one who can make that happen. I’ve learned that you just have to put in the work and do it! Set yourself up for success, but a cute dumbbell or download a guilty pleasure podcast, make YOU a priority, and you will be so glad you did.

Changes I’ve Made

Along with getting more serious about toning up, and workout out on a more regular basis, I’ve also been trying to incorporate some other small lifestyle changes. Nothing crazy, but little things that over time will make a big difference. For instance, at Chick Fil A, instead of getting a chicken sandwich like I normally would, I now always get a salad. I also do a My Protein shake after every workout, and it’s become one of my favorite post-workout treats! I’ve also been making sure we have at least one salad night on our meal plan each week, and while some weeks we fail, a lot of weeks we actually make it happen! I’ve stopped ordering Dr. Pepper when we’re out at a restaurant, and will only order water, which is oh so hard, but a change that NEEDS to happen. And, overall, I do more strength training than cardio, whereas in the past I would live and die by cardio only. But, I’ve seen more results over these past 6 or so months than I have in years! And I 100% credit that to focusing more on strength training and shorter, more efficient workouts.

None of this is to say of course that using a program to get fit is wrong. I’ve just never been a fan. But obviously it’s amazing for lots of people or it wouldn’t be so popular! You just have to find what works for you and figure out the best way to utilize your most precious commodity- your time!

And that’s a wrap! We’ve got B’s big birthday party tomorrow, and I CAN’T WAIT TO CELEBRATE HIM AGAIN!! We’re going to waffle-party it up, and I’ll probably cry again that he’s one.
