#MoveThatDadBod – Adam’s Fitness Journey and New Year’s Goals

Happy Wednesday! Today’s post is comin’ at ya from the hubs. Adam has played a huge part in my motivation to get back into shape and I thought you’d enjoy hearing more about his fitness journey!

2017 is upon us and there is nothing we can do about it now except for make it better than last year from today forward. I had not set any resolutions at the beginning of 2016 but got some motivation halfway through the year when I hit a bump on the highway and there was just a bit too much jiggle. I was 232 lbs at my heaviest and that was Summer of 2016. I was close to that when I left high school, but my fat to muscle ratio was much different. In August, I set my goal to be under 200 by January 1st of 2017 and I missed that goal by 1.8 lbs. I focused more on what I was eating and cut out as much added sugar as I could. The treadmill became my friend but I lost my motivation when I stalled at 210 lbs which is when I moved over to weights. Being strong has always been a goal of mine but that goal has increased. Now that I have a family, that goal has moved higher up the list. It is a fact of nature that when a building is on fire, the husband is the one carrying the family to safety. One of a father’s greatest responsibilities is to be physically strong for the family. Enough gilding the lily, you came here for my New Year’s Goals and here they are.

Exercise with Truckee once a week

“To his dog, every man is Napoleon; hence the constant popularity of dogs” – Aldous Huxley

This puppy dog has gotten lazy. She loves to run and play, but equally adores curling up on a blanket in a rain storm. Since she can’t open the door and go for a run herself (no opposable thumbs and all), it is my responsibility to make sure she is fit.

– Read at least two books a week with Adeline

“This is my most important role. If I fail at this, I fail at everything” – Mark Wahlberg

reading with baby

Adeline loves reading books right before bed and we always seem to make it into a party but sometimes I just don’t feel like I have time for it. Not only is this important for her brain, but it is a great time to bond and for her to know that I put great value in reading and acquiring knowledge.

Spend at least one night a week with Sarah distraction free

“There is nothing nobler or more admirable than when two people who see eye to eye keep house as man and wife, confounding their enemies and delighting their friends.” – Homer

Sarah has about two dozen irons in her fire and mine is equally full. Most nights we see each other in passing after Adeline goes to sleep as I head out to the garage and she gets on her computer. Our marriage is the most important thing in our lives and we need to give it the time that it requires to constantly grow.

Spend 20 hours a month exercising

“A bear, however hard he tries, grows tubby without exercise.” – A.A. Milne

If it be in the gym or on the trail, I need to keep the ‘ol ticker ticking. This is for general health and wellness to keep me around bothering Sarah for many more years to come.

Increase strength by at least 5% each month in my basic lifts (Bench, Overhead press, Deadlift, Squat)

“No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training…what a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” – Socrates

2017 is going to be the year of strength for me. I don’t care about 6 pack abs or shredded muscle but I am going to be strong. Tagline for this year: “Don’t be fat, be strong”

Play a board/card/dice game at least once a week

“Life is more fun if you play games.” – Roald Dahl

Game nights are usually the highlight of my week, but it doesn’t need to be a special night. A quick game of Nerts or The Duke can be done in 15 minutes and is a great way to activate your brain without looking at a monitor

Gotta get those gems. #splendor #boardgames #gamenight

There you have it. I hope to come back periodically with updates so that you guys can hold me accountable to these goals. Hit me up on instagram to make sure I don’t fall off the watermelon wagon on a daily basis.

What fitness goal are you working towards? Do you like game nights? Do you exercise with your pets?

Such a great post! It’s never hard to remember how many things moms juggle a day, but sometimes we forget how much our husbands have on their plates too. I think all of these are great goals!! I love the one about reading to Adeline. Tim and I join me for Jack’s bedtime routine and we try to take turns reading him books and we always say his prayers at night all together.

Really great goals! I hope 2017 is awesome for you and your family. I hope to try to spend more distraction/technology-free time with my husband in the evenings too. We both are guilty of scrolling through our phones unnecessarily.
