Just Call Me “Hippy”

Happy Hump Day! And only because you know how much I love the camel…

He cracks me up every Wednesday. Yep, never gets old!

If you’re a keen observer, you’ll notice that I added a “our wedding” page tab over there on the left.

<————————————————–

Feel free to check it out, and o0h and aww. But I will warn you, it’s LONG.

Last night was the definition of a super, duper, quick workout. I literally just had 15 minutes to squeeze in a gym run inbetween going home after work and going back out for dinner with some girlfriends.

The reason I only had 15 minutes was because I was distracted by this cuteness…

I hopped on the treadmill and bumped it up to a 7:53 pace, and knocked out the first .75 mile, then dropped it down to a 10:00 pace light job for .1 mile, then bumped it back up to 7:53 and finished out mile 1, then dropped it back down to 10:00 pace for .1 mile, then back up to 7:47 pace for .2 mile, then back down to 10:00 pace until 1.4 mile then back up to 7:34 pace to finish off 1.5 miles. I still had 2 minutes left on my treadmill when out of the blue, mid-SPRINT, the thing shut off on me! Thankfully it didn’t fling me off and whip me across the gym, but I just went ahead and wiped it down and went and told the gym manager that I thought I broke his treadmill.

Don’t worry, it was broken before I got on it. Why don’t they hang signs on them then??

Needless to say I was sufficiently sweaty for a 13 minute workout, so I hurried out and off to Panera for girls night. What we talked about last night lit a fire under my butt! And now I will share with you.

I’ve always been interested in the whole organic/natural living thing, but have never had time to really do any research and be informed. My friend Shelby was like an encyclopedia of knowledge on things to look out for, what’s bad and what’s not, resources to use, and just really got me thinking about all of the skincare products and household products we use day in and day out that are TERRIBLE for us! Like, LOADED down with harmful chemicals. Ick.

She recommended this website, ewg.org, as a resource to look up any product you can imagine and see what types of harmful substances they contain, and find better, safer options. Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like so you’ll know you’re in the right place!

And that oil spill you see mentioned? That happened not even a half hour away from us.

EWG has tons of categories for you to scroll through and type in a product and see where it lands on their safety scale. There’s even 80,000 cosmetic items you can look up! I was amazed at some of the things I use in my everyday ritual and how poorly they rated.

We talked all about how the general public THINKS the FDA regulates everything, but they really don’t. I also learned how bad artificial flavored/scented products are, and that you should ALWAYS buy “unscented” products when possible. Who knew?? AND this blew my mind…those Lysol wipes? The ones everyone including myself uses religiously to wipe down EVERY surface in the house? They’re TERRIBLE! BAH! Apparently baking soda is really where it’s at. Who knew! We even talked about how bad makeup can be for your skin, and what safer, more natural options would be! Long story short, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and essetial oils are amazing. I’ll elaborate more on a safer face-routine once I get all the details again from my girlfriend! My mind was blown though. But it all makes perfect sense.

One thing that really got me thinking, and I’ve been told this before but again because I’m lazy and submit to mass marketing I haven’t bothered to make a change, is the danger of aluminum based deoderant. Something like 90% of breast cancer is first detected in the upper outer quadrants of women, i.e. your lymphnodes by your armpits. (Don’t quote me on that, I’m trying to regergitate what we talked about). I KNOW I’ve heard this before, and have been told by multiple sources that the worst thing you can do is shave your armpits then put on your deoderant right after because the aluminum will soak into your pores. Almost any deoderant/anti-persperant is going to have aluminum listed as the first ingredient. The kicker is, THAT’S the anti-persperant part. In the past I’ve tried a natural deoderant stone, like a crystal stone, and seemed to like it okay. I think this is the one my parents actually both use…

My friend Shelby has done extensive research on homemade, natural deodorants and is going to show us how to make our own. PARTAY! After our talk last night, I actually DID need new deodorant, so I stopped by Kroger’s “hippy” section (as I like to call it) and bought myself some underarm magic I can feel good about: Kiss My Face fragrance and aluminum free deodorant.

We’re planning on getting together sometime soon and also making a batch of homemade laundry detergent. And if that goes well, I’m itching to make my own dishwashing detergent as well. There’s just so many toxic chemicals in all our main stream products that I shutter to think what we’re actually ingesting and absorbing into our skin on a daily basis. PLUS, making your own dishwashing and laundry detergent is MUCH cheaper than buying it!

So, just call me Hippy Sarah now because I’m on board. I’ve jumped on this crazy train and I’m all in!

Now, if I did a few blog posts or tutorials on homemade deodorant, homemade laundry detergent, homemade dishwashing detergent, and a more pure, healthy, safe face/makeup routine, would you be interested in reading?

OK, I’m definitely checking out EWG’s site. This is the second post I’ve read this week about it. Check out Going Green at Seize the Latte. Lillian is another AMAZING blogger, and her post has me ready to throw out just about every cleaning product in my house and start over! I would love to read more posts on healthy, homemade alternatives, so please, write away! Although I’ll warn you that my makeup routine is pretty fool-proof right now. Wake up, roll out of bed, brush my teeth, and voila, I’m done. Chapstick is the only ‘cosmetic’ I wear regularly. Didn’t realize my laziness has been saving me from scary chemicals all these years! YAY!

Nicole- Ooh! I’ll have to check that one out! I’m pretty jealous that you get to only wear chapstick every day. I’m already going crazy in my pencil skirt and face full of makeup! Ugh!

Beth- Definitely! My goal is to figure out some more stuff to change over before we have any kids, but I have a feeling it’s a LONG and slightly expensive process at first!

I’d read it! I don’t think I’d be able to practically toss out all of the products I use that might be not-so-good, but I’m always looking to reduce chemicals if I can!

Nikki- That’s how I am! I can’t just throw out everything, I’m such a creature of habit, but eventually hopefully I can change out a few staples!

This post is awesome. I am kind of like you, I know that in the back of my head the shampoo and cleaning agents I use on a daily basis probably aren’t very good for me, but I’ve been too lazy to research what I should replace them with. Also, I’m worried that organic and chemical-free versions of my favorite products won’t work as well as the chemically awful versions. I will be checking out the ewg site stat! Thanks, Sarah 🙂

I heard the same thing about deodorants! my mom told me that, oh i want to say, about 10 years ago- so there’s sufficient evidence to prove that it’s at least a factor. they were saying for a while that it was all anti-perspirants. its like, hello medical field, please give me a list of what doesnt cause cancer, since im pretty sure its a million times shorter than the list of what does. and also, medical field, please give that list to the government so they can outlaw all these poisons already! gah! ok, rant over.

I will admit, I would read them but I’m almost 100 that I wouldn’t attempt them, I’m not that vested. THat is so terrible. I am a Melaleuca representative for this very purpose though. The products are suppose to be much safer. I will have to use this website your friend shared and check out my own products. One thing I can’t veer to far from is my deodorant. Only certain ones are strong enough for me. I would be interested in hearing how that one worked for you. Very informative and I giggled at your Panera girls night compared to the unhealthy places my fellow group fitness instructors frequent. We need to tighten up 🙂 !

Joi- Haha so true. I’m still a little leery of the deodorant thing, I’m a sweaty mess most days! And no worries, that Panera thing was a random occurance, usually it’s more like let’s all meet at the mexican joint and STUFF our faces with cheese! 🙂

It’s good to know that I’m not the only one that LOVES that Geico commercial. Everytime it comes on, my hubby just gives me weird looks 🙂 Eh, he married me, so he can get used to it!

I would love to see some tutorials on homemade household things like laundry detergent and dishwasher soap. Since I’m going to have a little one running around soon, I figure it is probably high time that I start to research natural cleaning supplies! Can’t wait to see your posts!

Are we sisters from another mister??? Welcome to the hippy train! I get called that on a daily basis…Side note on the deoderant: Toms is good too – I love it! And Tom’s toothpaste! Make-up is another area that I’ve been transforming recently. Love finding vegan brands that $1000 a pop!
