Last night I headed to the gym for the first time in 2 weeks. You know, sometimes we all just fall off the wagon, but as long as we get back on, it’s ok! The past two weeks haven’t been completely exercise-less, though. I’ve been walking up a storm with Adeline now that the weather is nice and I’m loving being able to soak up some sun while we walk. I’ve been terrible about documenting my exercise on Insta, so I need to remember to be better!
So the gym last night. Kicked. My. Butt. Or did I kick its’ butt? I haven’t decided yet how it went, but one thing is for sure – I am sore this morning! I guess that’s a good sign. It’s amazing how two weeks off from strength training can make you feel like you’ve never picked up a weight in your entire life! I tried to workout as hard as I could, although if we’re being honest, I was NOT in the mood to go. But after a little encouragement from Adam, and the fact that this mom bod ain’t gonna tone itself, I went ahead and got after it. I’m so glad I did though because when I got home I remembered why I love endorphins so much. A good workout always leaves me feeling like…
I don’t know why but after having Adeline, I feel so empowered at the gym! I wish I could wear a shirt that says, “I BIRTHED A HUMAN AND I’M AT THE GYM. WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE?!”. It’s crazy how much our bodies change after having a baby. A part of me feels the same, but most of me feels completely different. I weigh about the same as I did when we got pregnant, believe it or not, but wowzers is it distributed differently! So differently that most of my clothing fits completely different, if at all, and I’ve got pooches in places I didn’t know I could have pooches. But you know what? Who cares?! I’m learning to embrace this new shape, because it is STRONG. And lifting weights reminds me of that. I want to be a strong mom for Adeline, and future tiny humans, and my husband, and myself! Strong moms are cool moms, indeed.
The workout I did last night could easily be replicated at home though, with the right equipment. As much as I love going to the gym, there are of course those nights where I dread it, and would rather just workout in my living room. As a busy mom, it’s just not realistic to expect to make it to the gym every night. Grace upon grace, people! You’ve got to just do what you can, when you can. And I’ve found that keeping a small set of dumbbells under the couch makes it so convenient to get in a few reps on the nights where the gym just doesn’t happen. Especially when it’s TGIT and you just HAVE to watch it live.
Here’s a workout similar to what I did last night, but altered to fit your living room, that can be done while you catch up on your favorite show! Of course, I’m not a personal trainer or professional in any way, so please be careful and adjust weight as needed to suit your needs. (And don’t do anything that doesn’t feel right!) In parentheses I put the weights that I used at the gym. After the strength portion, if you can somehow incorporate 15 minutes of cardio, that would really top it off! Last night I hopped on the treadmill and did 15 minutes of intervals to work up one last sweat!
