Getting back into shape is going to be quite the journey! If you’ve been following along then you know that I’m taking my sweet time and starting with reestablishing my cardio base, and working on my core. But guess what, I’m not the only one in this household who’s getting back to the gym! Adam is also getting back into the groove and starting to work in some strength train again. We’ve been taking turns (even if it’s just once a week for now!) with going to the gym, while the other watches Adeline, and so far I think we are both feeling the burn. (And by both, I mean I’m STILL sore from that 1 mile run…last week…).
For Adam though, strength training brings on the need for an increase in protein. Not only does consuming more protein help your energy levels, but it’s good for building those strong muscles too. It’s also a great way to help aid in post-workout recovery, something we both often neglect, especially when a tiny infant steals every second of our attention when we aren’t at the gym!
Because I’m the best wife ever, I wanted to try and make Adam a tasty, protein packed treat to have when he returned home from a tough workout. So, I got a little creative and made protein milkshakes. Since the protein powder is dairy free, I used my favorite dairy free ice cream! They turned out to be delicious, husband approved, and we’re going to have to make them a regular post-workout treat.
Ok, so here’s the details…
- Purely Inspired Organic Protein – Vanilla flavor
- Dairy Free Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
- Almond Milk – Vanilla
1. In your blender, add one scoop from the protein powder using the scooper provided, along with 3-4 scoops of your ice cream, and around a half cup of almond milk.
2. Turn that sucker on and blend it all up.
3. Pour into Tervis/Mason jar/Shaker of your choice, and store in freezer until you reach a nice almost-frozen-but-still-drinkable consistency.
Milkshakes are as easy as it gets when it comes to whipping up something on-the-go. It’s basically fool proof! Or baby brain proof.
The protein powder I used is Purely Inspired Organic Protein, which is plant-based, gluten green, dairy free, and soy free. It can be found at WalMart, which makes it super convenient. You can pick it up in either vanilla or chocolate. Basically, it’s a good, clean protein that’s affordable ($19.97!) and helps you stay on track with those fitness goals. Plus it’s also the ONLY truly organic USDA approved plant-based protein powder available at WalMart. Can’t go wrong there! If you’re not a shake person, it would be easy to add it to your favorite baked goods or smoothies as well.
Aside from my protein milkshake extravaganza, we also tried out these Mission 1 Clean Protein Bars. They too can be found at WalMart ($6.94 a box) and contain almost 20 grams of protein! These bars are excellent for keeping in the car with you for when you’re on the way to the gym, or when you can feel yourself getting hangry and in need of a pick-me-up. Having something like this that’s clean, organic, and quick is so helpful in keeping yourself properly fueled up. You can rest easy in knowing they are free from artificial ingredients as well.
My verdict: I like the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough best, but both are great!

How do you add extra protein? Do you make shakes or smoothies often? Are you a fan of protein bars?
