How I Stayed Active Throughout Pregnancy

Remember that time I was walking several times a week? “Staying active while pregnant is so easy,” said a second trimester not-as-hugely pregnant me. HA. Welp, then the baby hit a growth spurt, I suddenly felt like I was carrying around a a giant bowling ball, and my bladder simultaneously said “nope, not happening anymore.”

I tried really, really hard to walk as much as possible throughout my pregnancy, but now that we’re in the FINAL weeks, I’m having a really, really hard time making myself continue the walking. Granted, I do feel like I walk back and forth to the bathroom at work all.day.long, so that has to count as some form of exercise. Right? I’m at the point where walking is really just more uncomfortable than anything, and each time I start to walk, it’s like there’s a new ache that wasn’t there yesterday.

I don’t want to give myself a hard time though, because I do feel like I did my best to take care of myself, be active when I could be, and I think it truly paid off in how I’ve felt over the long haul. It hasn’t been the most fun or easiest 9 months ever, but I’m so glad I committed to continuing to MOVE, and I think it helped me stay in the healthy weight gain range, and I imagine it will play a huge part in how quickly I’m able to recover postpartum.

My goal for the next 4(ish) weeks is to still TRY to remain active, even if that means a suuuuper short walk here and a suuuuper short walk there. I also want to get back to doing my arm weights at night, but to be honest, by the time I get around to thinking about doing them I’m too tired to bend down and pick them up. #thestruggleisreal

On Instagram, I kept a pretty strict documentation of how many miles/minutes I put in while pregnant, so it’s been fun to look back at how the bump changed with those miles. It almost brings me to tears to look back at these pictures and think back on this journey. Life will never be the same, none of these moments will ever happen again, and these times with just Adam, Truckee, and I are officially numbered. I’m so thankful I took the time to document everything so much.

Here’s a quick look back at how I stayed active with a few of my favorite Instagram snippets:

The four of us took a little stroll tonight, and it was fab.

Squeezed the two of us into my actual workout clothes and hit the gym! 100* is WAY too hot for a preggo to walk outside!!   A photo posted by Sarah Ingle (@sarah_ingle1) on

If I did the math right in adding up all of the minutes spent walking or miles I actually documented on Instagram, it came out to 17.94 documented miles, and 18.25 hours of walking. I didn’t combine the two, so obviously the milage would be much higher, but if I had documented the actual milage, I didn’t include that amount of time in the time pile. Either way, I think Adeline will be proud of her mama for trying to keep us both healthy along the way!

I’ve got a few more weeks left to add to these numbers, but I doubt I’ll be adding anything substantial. Maybe a substantial dent in the couch.

How did you stay active in pregnancy? Were you a “pregnant runner?” Did you give up on exercise completely? Were you even able to continue to exercise?

I think it’s so awesome that you have been able to maintain a level of fitness and stay active throughout your pregnancy! I hope I will be the same way and not just want to lay on the couch all day eating brownies (Which is probably exactly how I will be!)

I bet you’ll be just if not more active 🙂 Although laying on the couch all day eating brownies is definitely tempting!! Haha!

I’m impressed that you’ve stayed so active throughout pregnancy. I was much more active during my first pregnancy, but this time have been taking it easier – A short walk with the dog every day, a weekly yoga class, and a weekly (easy!)bike ride. I always thought I’d be a pregnant runner, but it just didn’t feel good either time.
Only a few more weeks until you meet Adeline! How exciting. 🙂
And I definitely think all the back-and-forth to the bathroom counts for something!

Haha I’m glad you agree!! The bathroom is so far away, it feels like a short hike each time!! And I would love to hop on the bike, did you ever feel top heavy or wobbly on it?? I feel like I wouldn’t be comfortable?

I think I would feel off-kilter on a normal bike, but the one I’ve been using this summer is a cruiser. It’s more comfortable being upright vs hunched over the handlebars. I’m not sure how many more rides I have in me as the belly grows, but it’s been a nice way to get outside this summer!

You’re doing a great job! We are in the same boat and I finally decided this week to just do what I can. Last night we went on a 20 minute walk and it was tough! I’m also focusing on arm weights as I feel like it’s the only thing I can fully do, that and prenatal yoga… maybe find a class nearby? I LOVE mine.

I’m glad you can relate! I still can’t believe we’re just a day apart! Arm weights definitely feel like the only real productive thing I can still do, but even then, I’m just getting lazy!! I ALWAYS wanted and intended to do prenatal yoga but I just couldn’t get it to work out with my schedule. Maybe next time 😉

You have done such an amazing time staying active and I know your sweet baby girl is thriving because of it! Don’t feel like you have to do a ton these last few weeks, but just do what you can and what feels good. It will give you energy and will keep you busy until baby girl arrives! 🙂

Thanks friend! It’s getting tougher and tougher! I don’t know how you did it that last 40-41 week! You are one strong mama!

I’ve always loved seeing your walking Instagram posts 🙂 I was the girl who before pregnancy totally thought I’d be running a half marathon while pregnant. Well, I kind of did because I was training for one before I knew I was pregnant and ran 12 miles the week before… but. Running came to a VERY quick halt for me. It just did not happen, despite being in the best shape of my life right before getting pregnant. I couldn’t believe it.

I got put on bed rest at the end but all i wanted to do WAS walk just so I could have something to do! Walking is the pits though. I had so much pressure and the need to pee. Omg. It’s intense.

Good news though – I feel better than ever running now, with no issues! I thought it would be SO much harder to come back to it after a 6 month+ break. You will so get there, so don’t worry!

Thanks Melissa! Glad someone enjoys them 😉 It’s been the easiest way for me to keep track of what I’ve done! I was the same way! I totalllllly thought I’d be a pregnant runner, but no way! I was the same way, best shape for sure, and then a sudden stop! Ha! Oh I’m sorry you got put on bed rest! Can I ask what the reason was? I’m always nervous about that happening! I’m glad you feel better running now, that is a HUGE encouragement!!! I’ve wondered if my bladder will ever be the same! 🙂

I had some random complications and went into pre-term labor at 34 weeks but thankfully it stopped. I had real contractions until I delivered full term, thankfully. But they just wanted to make sure I wasn’t walking around if I was going into labor.

My bladder was SO bad but it is fine now and I didn’t even really do kegels (omg how I hate them!). Hoping the same for you! It really helps when someone isn’t jumping on your bladder all day!

Great advice on staying active as that’s exactly what I’m trying and hoping to do all throughout our pregnancy. I’m currently 16 weeks and super excited. Not much as for belly growth yet, however I do know it’s coming and want to ensure I’m not packing on a ton of extra wait everywhere else. Hikes are definitely our go to activity right now. Thanks so much love!!!
