It’s currently pouring down rain, Adeline is snoozing (finally!), Truckee is snoring, and I’m curled up on the couch with a cup of tea, and maybe a few bites of chocolate. So far, it’s a good morning! Or afternoon now, I guess.
Easing back into a fitness routine post-baby is something I always knew I’d want to try and make a priority. Of course, that’s easier said than done! It took a good two weeks before I felt like I had the energy to walk on the street, and not just from the bedroom to the kitchen. But, once I was finally up for it, it’s been the best way to decompress, clear my head, and get a fresh perspective on the day. Getting outside for even just a few minutes everyday and getting my blood flowing has hugely boosted my positive attitude, and made me feel less and less hormonal. (<– praise!).
This was at exactly two weeks. Lounge clothes, no makeup, no shower, tired eyes, and all, but we made it outside for our first official stroller walk! I may look like doo doo, but Lord almighty it felt amazing to be outside!
Walking is going to be my postpartum exercise “plan” for now. Since I essentially took 9+ months off from running, it’s going to take some time to rebuild those muscles and build up enough strength to start running again! Also, I’m pretty sure my boobs would hurt way too bad to even handle a run right now. But really. Also also, my hips are still so tight that I’m not sure I could even run if I tried! So, for now, I’m focusing on walking when I can, a little further and faster each time. I can’t wait for my first postpartum race though, it will feel oh so nice to be back!
Losing the baby weight hasn’t been a priority by any means, but I am pretty excited to only be 7 pounds away from where I started! I really feel about the same, but I’ve definitely noticed that my weight is distributed differently now, and I swear my hips are for sure wider! Hello mom-bod. I tried on a pair of jeans at Old Navy over the weekend “just to see” what size I might be right now, (because I desperately need to quit wearing leggings everywhere I go) and goodness gracious my guess was way off! Ha! My wider hip theory is most definitely correct. But you know what? I’m not bothered by it. I’ll get back to my pre-baby weight and shape eventually, but for now, I’m working on exercising for happiness and fresh air. And maybe to calm a crying baby.
It’s been so surreal taking Adeline on stroller walks. I feel like I dreamed about what it’d be like for months, years even, and now I’m finally in the mom role. I’ve loved showing her some of my favorite routes, and even if she sleeps most of the time, I know she enjoys them too! She’s a pretty fun walking partner so far, and I’m so excited to continue taking her on walks with me as she grows and grows! Speaking of her growing and growing, I thought I was going to die pushing her up our hill the other day. What am I going to do when she actually weighs a substantial weight??
Getting moving again after having a baby is no joke. If you’re like me and follow lots of other healthy living bloggers, then you know that it can be tough to play the comparison game. Not everyone can hop back on the treadmill a few days postpartum, or jump back into weight training and fitness classes after a week or two. Everyone’s recovery and journey is different, so don’t get discouraged! Take what you see on social media with a grain of salt, and exercise when it feels right!
Once I’m ready to run again, you better believe I’ll be sharing plenty more details. Adeline would never believe her mama is a twice marathoner! I hope that one day she loves to run too, but we’ve got a few years before we start to worry about that.
And just like that, my tiny ticking time bomb is awake!
