Truckee’s First Time Swimming

Well ladies and gents, here we are again! How was your weekend? Was it blissfully filled with catching up on sleep and lounging around? Spending time with family? Catching up with old friends? Watching your dog turn into a dolphin in a matter of minutes?

Don’t worry, because mine was!

I’m linking up again today with Katie over at Healthy Diva Life! Be sure and check out her weekly M.I.M.M. link up for some great reads and show some love to fellow bloggers!

We headed back to my hometown (just outside of Nashville) this weekend primarily because I had an engagement session to shoot first thing Sunday morning. *Sneak peek should be up on the photog. blog later this week!* And while we were in town, we wanted to sneak in plenty of family time. Moments with family are becoming more and more precious now that we live 5-6 hours from any family at all. Family is one of my top priorities, so when we are able to I like to soak it up. Family is forever, afterall.

We got in town late Friday evening after work and pretty much crashed as soon as we walked in the door. Then Saturday morning we met up with my brother and his wife, along with my parents, for a delicious and overly-huge breakfast. Adam and I both ordered a different take on “hash potatoes” and my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Carb loading should be my middle name. Marathon training starts this week. See? I have an excuse.

After breakfast, we headed back to the house and got our coolers and picnic bags loaded up for a trip to the lake! My dad planned this perfect “double date” with my parents out to a small lake not far from their house. As you know, my mom has been killing it with her diet and new exercise regimen. I think her new found love for being active is rubbing off more and more on the family and we’re all remembering how important staying fit really is. I think one reason I love summer so much is because of how EASY it is to get outside and play! I think if everyone would just take advantage of where they lived and searched out their locals parks and resources available to them we’d live in a much more active society. I can’t even imagine how many calories we all burned on our short lake trip just by walking around, chasing the dog, paddling a kayak, etc. Not to mention the added benefits of sunshine and fresh air 🙂

So, my grandfather gave my dad his kayak several years ago, and now that my dad finally has time to really get into it and play around he was ecstatic to take it out on the water! Adam is really getting into kayak fishing as well, so it was a great way for the men to bond and the girls to get some sun.

Dad strapped in the kayak in the back of the truck, then we strapped in the Monster Truck. (Thanks Andy for that new nickname!) Truckee has NEVER ridden in her kennel in the back of the truck before so this was a big deal for her! We knew she’d be doing some swimming today so I wasn’t about to let her in either of my parent’s cars after she was wet! She didn’t whine or anything, and seemed to do just find riding in the back. Imagine that.

When we got to the lake, we all took turns kayaking and exploring, inbetween keeping Truckee entertained with her new frisbee and tennis ball. Once we wore ourselves out, it was time…She had waited to patiently for it to be HER turn.

She thought long and hard about it. Her paws sat in the water for about .5 second before she just couldn’t contain herself and she dove in head first, never looking back. She crossed the threshold and was officially a grown lady.

She started off a little rough- not really sure how to doggy paddle, rolling around like a sea otter, and leaping like a dolphin. At times she would submerge her whole body and dive under water head first. My heart skipped a beat a few times wondering if she was going to come back up! We now call her…The Submarine.

She had waited her whole life for this moment, and she couldn’t get enough! She resurfaced, took a breathe, and got right back to business!

One last jump for good measure.

Dad! Dad! Dad! I swam! I swam! I’m a REAL dog now!

We threw the frisbee for her a few more times, and then we PULLED her out of the water and made her rest. If it were up to her she would keep playing and swimming all day long! Her life is complete.

I’d like to think this is what her face looked like while underwater.

All in all, it was a fun way for everyone to get some disguised exercise and make lots of new memories. Here’s a tiny preview of tonight’s full lake recap! Be sure and check back!

What did you do this weekend to stay active? Does your dog like to swim? Do they swim totally underwater?

How cute! Our dog does not like water at all! I have to hold an umbrella over her head to get her to do her business if it’s raining really bad. Truckee looks like she had a blast!

Kelly- Awww your poor pup! That sounds like my parent’s dog…he will just hold it until it quits raining. Dogs can be so froo-froo 😉

YAY for Truckee! Our dog does not like to swim, even though Vizslas have webbed feet and are supposed to be great swimmers. MacAfee just prefers to splash around and play in the shallow water.

Can’t wait to read the full lake recap. I LOVE that pic of Truckee watching you in the kayak. Great shot! And great family photo on the dock.

Nicole- Aww MacAfee! I think Truckee is a fish…but really! I could not believe how long she would dive under the water for! Does she have gills that I don’t know about?? And thanks! My dad actually took that one! I want to see more pictures of that Vizsla of yours!!

Awww this makes me get warm and fuzzies inside! Truckee is adorable like no other, and the picture of the lab underwater is too funny.

The only time Rosie’s been near a body of water (the sewer) she jumped right in…so I assume she likes swimming. We didn’t particularly like her smell after that incident, though. 😛

Truckee was BORN to swim! Look at her go!

Pugs aren’t really designed for athletics, swimming included. O and M have been in the pool, and they can kind of doggy paddle, with a hand close by. If you pick M up out of the water, she will still keep paddling, and she will continue doing so as you lower her in (she even does this in the bath). I bet B would be a great swimmer, but he doesn’t like people holding him, so if he has issues, it would be tough to get him out.

I did a bridge run on Saturday and then spent three hours in blazing sun for Jags training camp. I think that counts for something 🙂

Jenn- She’s a fish I’m telling you! Your pugs are so cute, I can just imagine seeing them swimming, their cute heavy backsides sinking hahaha. Yay for a bridge run!!! And of course that vitamin D counts for something! 🙂

Lol that underwater pic is too funny! That’s awesome that she jumped in! My dog would never jump in just gradually walk out and swim if I threw a stick. How old is she?

How cute is your pup?!?! My pup (she’s 25 pounds) is afraid of the water or maybe threatened by it? She barks at it, chases it, tries to eat it… It’s a confusing relationship. We tried to teach her to swim but she just looks panicked and paddles back to shore. I think she’s a shore girl for life!

The Look of pure joy on your dog’s face is priceless. It put a smile on my face.
I don’t have a dog. If I had a bigger house and a bigger property then I would have one, but in the time being it’s a cat.

So so cute! Looks like Truckee had an awesome time. I love that photo of the dog underwater too, how funny hehe.
When our dog was a puppy we took him to swimming lessons (I know, ridiculous) to get him used to the water as we live so near the sea. He loved it. And loves the sea as well hehe.

I have a border collie /australian shepherd mix and he LOVES to swim! Mostly he plays fetch in the water, I don’t know if he’s ever actually just swam to swim. The first time we went to the beach, I was worried he would be afraid of the waves, so I just chucked his ball out as fall as I could and he just catapulted into the first wave, ha. But he loved it.

That is so cute! My cocker spaniel I had when I was growing up loved water too. So much, in fact, that she jumped in the tub with my great grandma once! lol
