Well ladies and gents, here we are again! How was your weekend? Was it blissfully filled with catching up on sleep and lounging around? Spending time with family? Catching up with old friends? Watching your dog turn into a dolphin in a matter of minutes?
Don’t worry, because mine was!
We headed back to my hometown (just outside of Nashville) this weekend primarily because I had an engagement session to shoot first thing Sunday morning. *Sneak peek should be up on the photog. blog later this week!* And while we were in town, we wanted to sneak in plenty of family time. Moments with family are becoming more and more precious now that we live 5-6 hours from any family at all. Family is one of my top priorities, so when we are able to I like to soak it up. Family is forever, afterall.
We got in town late Friday evening after work and pretty much crashed as soon as we walked in the door. Then Saturday morning we met up with my brother and his wife, along with my parents, for a delicious and overly-huge breakfast. Adam and I both ordered a different take on “hash potatoes” and my mouth is watering just thinking about it! Carb loading should be my middle name. Marathon training starts this week. See? I have an excuse.
After breakfast, we headed back to the house and got our coolers and picnic bags loaded up for a trip to the lake! My dad planned this perfect “double date” with my parents out to a small lake not far from their house. As you know, my mom has been killing it with her diet and new exercise regimen. I think her new found love for being active is rubbing off more and more on the family and we’re all remembering how important staying fit really is. I think one reason I love summer so much is because of how EASY it is to get outside and play! I think if everyone would just take advantage of where they lived and searched out their locals parks and resources available to them we’d live in a much more active society. I can’t even imagine how many calories we all burned on our short lake trip just by walking around, chasing the dog, paddling a kayak, etc. Not to mention the added benefits of sunshine and fresh air 🙂
So, my grandfather gave my dad his kayak several years ago, and now that my dad finally has time to really get into it and play around he was ecstatic to take it out on the water! Adam is really getting into kayak fishing as well, so it was a great way for the men to bond and the girls to get some sun.
Dad strapped in the kayak in the back of the truck, then we strapped in the Monster Truck. (Thanks Andy for that new nickname!) Truckee has NEVER ridden in her kennel in the back of the truck before so this was a big deal for her! We knew she’d be doing some swimming today so I wasn’t about to let her in either of my parent’s cars after she was wet! She didn’t whine or anything, and seemed to do just find riding in the back. Imagine that.
When we got to the lake, we all took turns kayaking and exploring, inbetween keeping Truckee entertained with her new frisbee and tennis ball. Once we wore ourselves out, it was time…She had waited to patiently for it to be HER turn.
She thought long and hard about it. Her paws sat in the water for about .5 second before she just couldn’t contain herself and she dove in head first, never looking back. She crossed the threshold and was officially a grown lady.
She started off a little rough- not really sure how to doggy paddle, rolling around like a sea otter, and leaping like a dolphin. At times she would submerge her whole body and dive under water head first. My heart skipped a beat a few times wondering if she was going to come back up! We now call her…The Submarine.
She had waited her whole life for this moment, and she couldn’t get enough! She resurfaced, took a breathe, and got right back to business!
One last jump for good measure.
Dad! Dad! Dad! I swam! I swam! I’m a REAL dog now!
We threw the frisbee for her a few more times, and then we PULLED her out of the water and made her rest. If it were up to her she would keep playing and swimming all day long! Her life is complete.
I’d like to think this is what her face looked like while underwater.
All in all, it was a fun way for everyone to get some disguised exercise and make lots of new memories. Here’s a tiny preview of tonight’s full lake recap! Be sure and check back!
What did you do this weekend to stay active? Does your dog like to swim? Do they swim totally underwater?
