Cross Training – Getting Back On My Bike and Into the Gym

Hi friends!

Now that summer is coming to an end, fall is right around the corner, and half & full marathon prep are about to really kick into high gear, I’ve also been transitioning in my training habits and preferences. Call it boredom, or burnt out from the summer heat (literally), but I’ve really been enjoying switching things up, and varying my day-to-day workouts. I know I still need to focus on getting my milage in, but I also know that if I’m being honest with myself, I will enjoy this training cycle much more if I keep things interesting. And not only that, but I remember last year during marathon training how beat down my body felt, and I really think it’s because the only training I was doing was running. So this go-around, I am making a bigger effort to strength train, and switch up my cardio more so that I can build a stronger base, and not have to rely so much on such strict milage, which we all know can burn you out faster than anything! I think to be a stronger runner, you have to be strong in other areas too, and not ignore those muscles that you may not feel working when you run.

Diversifying my Workouts: Biking and Strength Training

Here’s what I’ve been doing lately to keep myself entertained and motivated, but still in shape.

Biking! Or cycling. Who even calls it cycling? Maybe I’m the weirdo that calls it biking.

We’ve been taking full advantage of the trails in our little suburb and I’m going to be oh-so sad when the time changes! Our bikes were each other’s wedding gifts to one another two years ago, so it’s about time we get some more use out of them.

And more biking. If Little Rock does one thing right it’s their trails. The River Trail is the perfect bike ride – safe, beautiful, along the river, no cars, and always full of other active people.

Aren’t these Nike’s adorable?! I can’t WAIT to review them and tell you all about them! It was love at first sight.

We also recently joined a new gym! It literally cost next to nothing to join, and is only $10 a month. TEN DOLLARS! The gym is super nice too, has tons of awesome equipment, and plenty of cardio machines for those cold winter months or rainy evenings! My husband joined with me, and we’ve got big plans to go together in the mornings before work. I’ll let you know how that goes. But at least we are finally members of the same gym! He was previously paying more than 3X’s as much for the gym at his employer, so we nipped that in the bud and got us both a cheaper gym membership combined.

Strength training at the gym, and wrestling with medicine balls forces me to get in a more full body workout, and improve my overall muscle tone. I think sometimes I forget that I need to workout more than just my legs! The gym also offers yoga, piyo, and zumba classes – woohoo!

So, here’s to a STRONG training cycle, and spicing things up a bit! Half marathon #7 in 7 weeks!! AH!

    I am making sure I am doing more strength training and cross training before my marathon too! I really think this will make me stronger (well duh I will be strength training lol!) and faster! Plus, I think it will reduce the chance of me being injured.

      I think so too! I just feel stronger all around, and less prone to hurting myself or pulling a muscle! At least I hope 🙂

    Nice job on the cycling! I love biking to break up the monotony of running so many miles during training. I am definitely burnt out from the summer heat and running all summer long. I am glad that fall makes running a little easier with the lower temps. This morning, I did some strength training, rowing, and the elliptical to break things up a bit. It’s so refreshing!

    i love love love those shoes!! So pretty 🙂 and yeah i need to diversify a bit– specifically i need to work in more cardio somehow– i like this biking idea… hmm i think you’ve inspired me 😀

    When I’m not running, I’m biking (or cycling or riding!) and strength training for exercise. Riding with my husband makes it more fun!

    You’re bike is similar to mind.
    At the moment, I can run faster than bike, how sad is that. I don’t do enough biking though.
    I’ve also switched my long runs to trail runs, this time I’m going to be uber prepared for my trail event in November.

        The trail run is 21km. It’s called Run from the hills. It’s a point to point race, and yes, there will be hills.

    I haven’t joined a gym in over 2 years! I do mostly body-weight training and yoga classes as my strength workouts. There is a super small gym at our condo complex so I lift heavy weights like once in a blue moon- really need to do it more often!

      Oh my goodness, YES! That was always my biggest struggle too…and I was convinced that because I was running, I was “totally working out my abs” as well. Haha

    I used to be a very lazy work-out person, but when i got my first folding bike, I really loved it to a point that I see to it that I take a ride everyday – as long as weather permits. Then from there on, I started biking, then going to workouts for longer rides.

    It all really started with a bike and I hope it does wonders of others the way it did to me as well.
