This weekend we were able to celebrate our second anniversary, which is actually today! This post has A LOT of pictures, so there’s your warning.
We took a trip up to Northwest Arkansas, and stayed with a good college friend since rain threatened our original camping plans. It turned out perfect though, because it was so so good to catch up with her! I’m still itching to go camping though, so hopefully all of this rain in Arkansas will stop sometime soon!
Friday afternoon we drove up to Rogers, (you may recognize this as the town that the Duggars live near) and met our friend Brooke at her apartment. We then changed clothes, freshened up, and headed out to a fun and casual dinner on the lake. The evening ended up being beautiful, despite the weatherman predicting strong storms. We really lucked out, and I wanted to take advantage of a pretty night so we ate at a little restaurant at a marina on Beaver Lake, and all indulged in burgers and sweet potato fries!
That was my first round pic for my outfit, but after deciding we were going casual, I opted for the Maxi.
Saturday morning first thing, Adam and I woke up, packed up our swimsuits, extra clothes, and rain jackets, and headed out to the Buffalo River. The drive is about an hour and a half, but it’s through the Ozark mountains so it’s GORGEOUS! We arrived at the Buffalo Outdoor Center in Ponca, AR around 9:00 AM or so, and got our reservation ticket, and a few “souvenirs” then were on our way down to the launch site! On our way we spotted an elk, and it was one of the most beautiful animals ever! We thought maybe it was a female moose at first, but turns out we were right by an elk preservation.
The launch site for the float we did was Steel Creek, and we floated 8 miles down to Kyle’s Landing. The float is supposed to take 4-6 hours, but we ended up taking only 3 hours. We knew it was going to storm between 1-2, so we really didn’t want to risk getting caught! We put in the river at 9:30, and were out at 12:30 almost exactly! And of course, as soon as we got in our car it started thundering! Lots of pictures ahead…
There were beautiful bluffs all along the river, and so much to look at! We skipped out on the hike at Hemmed-in Hollow to a 200 ft waterfall for fear we’d get caught in a storm later. Looking back I hate that we missed it!
We were about 90% successful our entire float. We hit one really bad spot where Adam had to get out and basically pull us through or else we would have probably been destroyed on the rocks, and another spot towards the end we actually flipped. But that’s a whole other story! Let’s just say this rapid came out of nowhere, and our knees are very sore today!
When we got to the take out site, we had no idea how quickly we had paddled. We even “floated” for a good bit, but I guess since we were trying to beat the storms, we went faster than we thought! I’d like to think it was my immense upper body strength that powered us down the river, but in truth I probably paddled only half as much as Adam did 🙂
It was SO much fun, and I’m already excited about doing it again!
After our float, we drove back over to Rogers, then showered and got ready for our dinner and date down in Fayetteville.
We ate at a nice restaurant called Mermaids, and pretty much gorged ourselves! We were STARVING after our float trip earlier in the day. We were pretty much ravenous beasts at dinner. Fun fact, Pharrell ate here last week during Walmart’s Shareholder’s Week.
After dinner, we walked around Fayetteville Town Square and killed a half hour or so before our actual date.
Date time! We had reservations at Painting With a Twist, which is one of those painting class places, and it was Couple’s Night. I had never done one before, and it ended up being so fun! There were 6 of us couples, and we all got along really well and had such a good time! Just call us Monet and Picasso because we made a masterpiece.
After dinner, as if this day wasn’t long enough, we discovered a retro arcade! Adam begged me to go inside and check it out just for a few minutes, and we ended up staying for TWO hours!!! He and the owner hit it off right away like PB & J, and he even spotted our admission fee AND bought us drinks for our anniversary! This was probably the highlight of Adam’s weekend, playing retro video games he played when he was little! I stuck to the classics like Pac-Man, Tetris, and Mario.
Tube TV and Atari. I could have left him here and came back the next day and he wouldn’t have noticed.
Sunday morning we slept in, then went to cute little downtown Rogers, and ate a quick lunch at Iron Horse Coffee Co.
And after we finished our coffee, it was time to head home to Little Rock! It rained the whole drive home, but I’m so thankful we had an almost-rain free weekend.
Check out a few of the views from our drive up and back down…
It’s so pretty up there, I highly recommend you pay that region of Arkansas a visit!
Have you been to northwest Arkansas? How have you celebrated a recent anniversary or special occasion? Have you been floating this summer yet?
