Blogger Feature: Daily Cup of Kate

Hello hello!!

It’s another cold, and icy night here in Arkansas. I really can’t wait for it to be the perfect “cool” again. Shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt make me a happy, happy girl! Tonight I had thought about hitting the gym for another couple gentle miles, but since our front porch was already icy when we got home, I decided it was a sign and that I should finally stay home and start on one of my resolutions.

“Weights on Wednesdays”

I haven’t done any strength training in seriously who knows how long and I’m a little embarrassed to admit that! Before we got married I used to do a lot of the machines at the gym and lift more free weights, but then I started working full time and running A LOT and I figured all I had time for was just to run. Thus, the bad habit of all running, all the time was formed. Not that it hasn’t worked for me, but 15 minutes in of free weights tonight I realized just how badly I needed some weight work! I will be sore tomorrow, that’s for sure. So sad. It just goes to show that whatever you make a priority in your mind is what you will actually do, and for me, the past year my priority has strictly been running. But if I want to improve my times and become an even stronger runner, then more strength training is the obvious answer! And guys, please don’t laugh when my legs feel like jello tomorrow and I can’t walk down stairs. I deserve it. I know, I know! And side note, there WAS a 10 lb dumbbell right next to me. I’m not THAT big of a wuss. Don’t judge me, k? I really was strong at one point in time. I’ll get there again!

She tried really hard to help tonight, but instead just made me laugh. I was literally standing there doing some arm stuff when she just collapsed at my feet. What a diva.

But enough about me!! It’s time for another BLOGGER FEATURE! Let’s talk about my new friend, Katie Martino and her fabulous blog, Daily Cup of Kate!

For the next 4 blogger features, I’ve made an interview-style format, and gave them a list of questions and had them choose their top favorites to answer. That way everyone’s should be a little different!

Katie’s blog is super cute so be sure and check it out when you leave here! She has awesome recipes, great workouts, and fun recaps of her adorable life. Not to mention she’s an amazing athlete! Too bad she’s all the way up in WI or I’d want to be friends with her in real life! You’ll probably agree, so without anymore of my blabbering, here she is!

Enjoy!

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi! My name is Katie and I blog over at Daily Cup of Kate. I am originally from a suburb of Chicago (go Cubbies!) but moved to Madison, WI shortly after college and have been loving it ever since. I work as a Wellness Director for a company working with employees to obtain and maintain a healthy lifestyle and it is so rewarding! When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my fiance, Scott and our pup, Maddie. While I have a passion for fitness (especially running) and health I do also enjoy a good glass of red wine or craft beer with some cheese curds here and there—hey, I do live in Wisconsin ya know! ;)

2. What inspired you to start your blog?

I had thought about starting a blog for quite some time, and I think what really inspired me to actually pull the trigger is getting engaged last March. I wanted to create  an online “journal” so I could look back on the planning process and the excitement leading up to the big day but I also wanted a way to share my love for fitness and health and be a part of the healthy living blogger community.

3. What is your favorite distance to run?

Oh, this is a hard one. My favorite distance to run is a marathon (I’m all about endurance) but my favorite distance to train for is a half marathon. I love the sense of accomplishment I feel after finishing a marathon knowing all of that hard work and time I spent leading up to the big day but I love how training for a half marathon doesn’t take as much time out of your week as far as training goes.

4. When did you start running?

Believe it or not, I didn’t start running until my senior year of high school. I was big into sports–tennis, basketball, and soccer– but running wasn’t my thing. My friend invited me to come along and watch the Chicago Marathon that year and within few minutes of watching I was in awe and simply amazed at the world of running. After watching, I was determined to run the marathon next year. So, I signed up for my first ever race (I hadn’t even done a 5k!) and ran the Chicago Marathon in 2006! Ever since then, I’ve been hooked!

5. How many races have you run?

Oh goodness, I have no idea. I can tell you I have ran over 15 half marathons and 7 full marathons though!

6. What is your dream accomplishment? Is it a tri? An ultra-marathon?

I finished my first ever triathlon (olympic distance) this past summer and really enjoyed it. This summer I am strongly thinking about signing up for a half ironman and my dream accomplishment is to finish a full ironman! (5 year plan!)

7. What are your upcoming races and goals?

I am currently working on my race schedule for 2014 and this is what I am thinking so far:

As far as goals, nothing specific yet, maybe PR in a half marathon.

8. What advice would you give to runners who are just starting out?

Be patient and don’t quit! Running is no easy task, and I know how easy it is to get discouraged. Sign up for a local 5k or another race down the road or join a running group to keep you motivated and accountable. Oh, and also invest in a pair of decent running shoes!!

9. When you’re not running, how do you stay active?

I am a big fan of lifting weights– I feel so much stronger! When I am not training for a race (usually winter time) I take part in Crossfit and Bootcamp style classes held at my gym as well as hit up some yoga and spinning classes here and there. I love keeping things fresh and having variety. I am a big fan of body weight workouts too like this one and this one.

10. What race is on your bucket list?

I would LOVE to qualify for Boston, so that’s on the top of my list for sure. I also would love to do the Big Sur half marathon in California or the Disney World half marathon!

11. What shoes do you run in and why?

I am a loyal fan of Asic Gel Kayanos. I have been running in them ever since my first marathon and have never had any problems!

12. Name 3 running or healthy living blogs you are currently loving.

Besides Sarah’s blog?! ;) I have a lot of blogs I follow, but these are some that quickly come to mind:

Cori @ Olive To Run

Thanks so much, Katie!!

Thanks for introducing us to Katie’s blog! I haven’t read it before so I will have to check it out!

Last time I trained for a half I did not do barely any strength training and when I do another one I definitely want to keep it as a huge part of my exercise focus!

You are such an inspiration! You are incredibly determined, I love it. I think I read it correctly- your first race ever was the Chicago Marathon? I hear great things about that marathon. Big Sur would be such a gorgeous marathon to run- hilly, but absolutely breath taking! Loved your feature:)
