This weekend, ya’ll. It was one of those weekends. You know the kind. The kind where you think, “my family is pretty stinkin’ awesome and imma need to press pause because I don’t want it to end!” That kind. The kind where you wish Saturday was 36 hours instead of 24.
We didn’t have any plans this weekend. In fact, we had plans to NOT have plans. But somehow we had the best family date and I am totally wishing we could have lived in those moments forever. Saturday afternoon, after Adeline took a crazy 3 hour nap, I was feeling spontaneous so we loaded up the car in about 5 minutes and headed out to the cutest new play space in town. Before I share all the details though, here are a few scenes from earlier in the weekend.
Adeline is turning into the cutest, most adorable, and I mean FREAKIN’ ADORABLE little girl. I just can’t even handle her cuteness. She literally makes my heart grow 10 sizes bigger every day and sometimes I think my heart might actually explode I love her so much. Friday afternoon I took her to the playground for a little fresh air between meetings and little Adeline-Lou-Who just smiled and smiled. There were a few other kids there and Adeline wanted so badly to play with them and do everything they did. It’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking watching her grow up!
Saturday morning, Adeline colored and hung out in her jammies. For some reason, watching Adeline color just melts my heart, and I think it’s the sweetest thing. I hope she’ll always enjoying using her imagination! Also, lefty? Maybe? No one in our family is left handed but she sure uses her left hand a lot!
Once it was time for her nap, Adeline went down and snoozed for 3 hours! I was super productive while she slept, but cabin fever has been something fierce this week after being sick for a few days so as soon as she woke up I was itching to GO SOMEWHERE. It’s not like me to be spontaneous. In fact, there isn’t a spontaneous bone in my body. But I was craving something fun for Adeline to do that would entertain her better than running around our house until dinnertime. So, we got out of our jammies super fast, told Adam to hurry up and feed the dog, and get in the car because we were goin’ on a family date! Thankfully he was up for a spontaneous adventure and dropped everything he was doing to oblige my wild hair.
We went to a new play space in town, and it was the cutest thing ever! It’s a huge playroom with tons of modern toys and different learning stations, and it’s connected to a coffee shop so you can treat yo ‘self while the kiddos play! And, it helps benefit local foster care. It’s only $5 for all day play during free time, and then they have special hours for parties and fun classes for mom and baby. Their main mission is to help parents relax a little while their kids play and learn, and know that there are adults supervising them still. The staff was so sweet, and all the girls who worked there seemed really excited to watch the kids, and mingle with them while they played. Adeline thought she was in Disneyland! Her eyes widened and lit up as soon as we walked into the main room. I think she saw endless possibilities for FUN!
We just had the greatest time watching her play for an hour, I wanted to freeze time. I feel like we aren’t spontaneous as a family enough so Saturday’s fun surprise date was much needed. It just made my heart so happy to see her run around, hang with other kids, explore new toys, and just LIVE IT UP! She knew this was a place for her and not for Mom and Dad so she was alllll about it! I’m so glad we tried it out, because it was a good reminder to do things as a family that focus on Adeline. So many times we have family outings doing things we want to do, and we just take her with us because we have to. (Does she really want to go to dinner with us? Does she really want to go shopping with us? What is she getting out of that?) But doing something like this let Adeline truly PLAY and enjoy herself fully. She was 100% in kid mode and I loved watching. We are living her childhood as we speak, and I want her to have sweet, sweet memories!
Oh my goodness, it was just so much fun. (If she could have taken that car home with us, she would have.) We were only there for an hour because it was so last minute and their free time closed at 4, but I think an hour was plenty! She played her heart out, and was so tired when we left! We headed straight to dinner, where she ate a huge meal and drank a huge sippy of water! Playing really takes it out of you!
I so wished our family date could have lasted forever. Adeline is growing up so fast and I don’t ever want to forget these moments! Our sermon at church yesterday was on JOY, and being intentional about being joyful. Adeline is my greatest joy, but so is Adam, and I thank God every day that that is my reality. I try to make it a goal to teach Adeline what it means to live joyfully, and judging by how she played on Saturday, it was like watching joy in its purest form.
What did you do this weekend? Have you been to a cool play space like this? Do you take family dates that are focused on the kids?
