I’m happy to report that I managed to make five workouts happen this week, including two on one day! I’m hoping to squeeze in a sixth today, but feel good about five for now! I thought I’d break them down, just to maybe encourage some other mamas out there who are also on their own postpartum fitness journeys! I think so often what we see on social media are the 6 pack abs and the toned biceps, that somehow appear just a few short months after giving birth. But, we all know it’s much harder than that, and you just can’t get stuck comparing yourself to others!
It’s hard for me to be so open about my workouts right now because while I’m so proud of myself, and I’m feeling stronger and faster (and more tired, ha!), I’m also just not feeling confident in them yet. I’m still seeing times I’m not thrilled to see, and pre-babies me would have thought I was insanely slow. I’m still struggling with comparing my past fitness level to my current fitness level and it’s a hard thing to reconcile mentally. I know what I’m capable of, from what I’ve done in the past, but it’s like comparing apples to oranges. It’s a constant battle!
I’m still hovering within a pound or two of my pre-Barrett weight, but muscle tone wise and strength wise, I’m still nowhere near where I was. But, I’ll get there. Slowly, but surely! It is such a slow process, so learning to be patient with myself has been key. I think back to when I was getting back in shape after baby #1 and I HAD SO MUCH TIME! Like, how?? So.Much.Time. Two kids though, wow, game changer.
Thankfully, Adam has been so great and has been really encouraging throughout this new fitness journey. He’s also getting back in shape himself, so it hugely helps to have a spouse who is so supportive. He’s basically super dad!
3.1 mile run, finally broke 30 minutes on the track!
30 minute garage strength workout at lunchtime + 3.1 mile evening run
3.1 mile run
3.1 mile run + cool down game of “red light green light” with my best girl
I’m hoping to squeeze in a quick garage workout or outside walk with Barrett maybe. It’s GORGEOUS today, and supposed to rain all weekend, so getting outside today is priority!
Overall, I’m proud of myself for just being more active, and prioritizing my workouts more. I’m definitely feeling more fit, and can tell a difference in how my jeans fit, so that’s good! My runs are making me feel faster and more agile, and my strength workouts are making me feel notably stronger. I’m a little frustrated I wasn’t able to break 30 minutes again on my runs though, but I’m chalking it up to the fact that running through our neighborhood when it’s hot and windy is way more difficult than running on the track!
I’m learning that it’s OKAY to leave Adam with the kids, and just walkout when I need him to take over. I’m learning that he is perfectly capable of holding down the fort, and everyone will survive if mom is gone for 30 minutes! Ha!
What’s on your weekend workout agenda?
