7 Ways to Maintain a Healthy & Active Marriage

Hi friends!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about all of the ways my husband and I try to stay active. It really just comes as second nature, and I couldn’t imagine us NOT being as active as we are. I’m thankful that we live in an area that makes it relatively easy, and hope that we’ll always be able to live somewhere that promotes healthy lifestyles! I’m also so thankful that we have really started our marriage off with healthy habits, and hope to carry them out for years to come. I brainstormed a few of the ways we’ve been able to keep ourselves motivated, and clever things that have kept us active without really realizing it!

7 Ways to Maintain a Healthy & Active Marriage

1. Make a joint “Bucket List” for your state

-This is a big one for us! There are so many things we want to do, and places we want to see here in Arkansas so it only made sense to make a sort of “bucket list” of what we want to be sure and do! It’s fun to have little mini trips and excursions to look forward to, and when you plan them out and do them together, you’re more likely to stick to it! Plus, think of all those fun memories you will make. Recently, we floated a popular river in northern Arkansas, and you better believe we burned upwards of 1,000 calories the whole day! There are several hikes, mountains, waterfalls, etc. that we are itching to hike to or just go see! A bucket list for your own state is an EASY way to make use of those empty weekends and get outdoors and explore! Plus, these types of trips or “staycations” are typically pretty budget friendly! In fact, for our first anniversary we rented  a little cabin up on a lake we had been dying to visit and spent the weekend fishing and enjoying the great outdoors!

2. Adopt a dog – preferably a big one, or one that will require a lot of exercise

-I’ve always had dogs growing up, both big and small. But I’ve never had a big dog that was an inside dog that legitimately NEEDED to be walked on the reg! We had no idea when we got Truckee that she would be one of our easiest and most fun forms of exercise! Seriously, there have been tons of days where I am anything but in the mood to run, so instead I’ll take Truckee on a long walk, and by the end of it we’ve both gotten in plenty of exercise for the day! Better yet, if we want to switch things up, we’ll take her hiking with us or even swimming. She is always happy to log some miles, is always encouraging, and will literally help me up a hill! It’s so important to me to give Truckee the exercise she deserves and let her stretch her legs as much as possible because she spends the majority of the day in her kennel. Her health literally depends on her lifestyle, just like our health depends on our lifestyle, and it kills me to think about her becoming overweight and stiff! So, consider getting a dog! Trust me, they’ll keep you on your toes, and you’ll both end up exercising way more than you think! You’ll probably even enjoy it! Actually, you will. How can you say no that face?!

3. Sign up for a race together

-Finding a race or a fun active event to both sign up for is a GREAT way to stay active and motivate each other! You’ll be there for each other’s training, and be able to support one another. Then, when you both are able to cross that finish line, you’ll be able to share in the joy of accomplishing your goal! The last race we both ran together was Nashville’s Hot Chocolate race series. Adam ran the 5K, and I ran the 15K. Even though we didn’t run side by side, we were still able to encourage each other beforehand, and cheer each other on at the finish line on race day! And, when you do a race or an even together you are bound to come away with some sort of silly story! Those are the memories I hope I remember well into the future 🙂 Our story this time? It was probably the coldest day on Earth known to man.

4. Do yard work together

-This is a workout that really gets overlooked! Get outside, turn up Spotify or Pandora on your phone, put on some old ratty clothes, and clean up the yard together. Pull weeds, weed eat, mow, plant flowers, move rocks, burn sticks, anything! All of these “chores” will torch some calories! And especially if it’s hot out, you’ll really get your sweat on! Just because it’s not a run, walk, or hike, doesn’t mean it’s not a workout!

5. Google the trails in your city

-Odds are, your city has a Park and Recreation Department that can give you information on where the trails or walking paths are. Even if your city isn’t very “walkable”, often times you can find hidden gems that aren’t very well advertised! And often times are the hidden gems are the prettiest, and the best way to escape from the real world for a little bit! This weekend I found a brand new (to me) trail that I had never heard of, and I was ecstatic to go walk it, with Truckee of course. It was just so exciting to find some new scenery, and I really enjoyed getting out and getting some fresh air! Exercising in a new environment gives you so much clarity and peace of mind, at least for me! We love getting out and walking the trails, and we especially appreciate them for the safety aspect. I also am often running on the trails around here, and even ran 18 miles of my first marathon along one of the main trails in town! It never hurts to Google what your city has to offer, and I bet you’ll be surprised by what you’ll find, even if you just ask around!

6. Meal plan together

-We don’t do this enough, but I wish we did! Well, I guess we tentatively do. Meal planning together can help keep you on the right track diet wise! We like to each try and pick out a meal or two we want during the week, and when we already have our hearts set on a recipe, or know that the other one is cooking, we’re less likely to splurge and grab Taco Bueno on the way home! But really!

7.  Join the closest gym together

-We aren’t members at the SAME gym, in fact I’m currently not even a member, (I ended it once the weather got nice) but both of you having a place to go and get your workout on makes it so easy to stay active! When one goes, often the other one is also encouraged to go! Right now, Adam works out at the gym that’s attached to his office building, so he’s able to get a mid-day workout in most days, whereas I typically will run at night after work. But during the winter when I DO go to the gym, it’s an easy way to hold each other accountable! Sometimes gyms will give you a deal too if you sign up together! A few fun perks of both being gym members or even just being committed to a training plan?  You can shop for cute workout clothes together, brag on each other’s gym accomplishments, and have yet another fun thing in common! A happy marriage to me means that you can talk about anything together, even how many lunges you did at the gym that day over dinner 🙂 Grow stronger together, not weaker!

Thanks for this! My boyfriend and I are both active – we like hiking, walking my dogs, etc. but we DON’T LIKE RUNNING TOGETHER! It’s so upsetting. We’ve tried it for years but it’s never much fun for either of us. He’s a cyclist so now he usually will go on a bike ride while I run and we’ll both get our workouts in 🙂

So fun! We don’t like running TOGETHER really either haha – we just run at completely different paces!! That’s hilarious! I think him riding and you running seems to work out just perfectly then!

I love these ideas! I always wanted a dog to run with. My brother got a dog when I still lived at home and I was so excited to having a buddy to run with- except he wouldn’t. He was so stubborn, haha. My husband isn’t as active as I would like. I am hoping to get more active this summer as soon as our big project is over. We do go on the boat and do that stuff together which is so fun!

Oh I wish we had a boat to go out on! I ‘d never had a dog to run with before Truckee either..it’s a lot of work to get them to behave and enjoy running on a leash!

making a bucket list of your own state is a great idea!
We do #2 and #4 together already and #3 will be coming in the fall ( hopefully).

    Great list!

I love this and we follow all but 6 & 7. I think it’s just important to have similar interests and enjoy doing things together. It’s hard for us to do a lot of those because my husband has been on a night shift for the last 6-ish months, but we are inseparable.

I think so too, it really gives you something else to talk about too other than more stressful things, you know?

I am still trying to talk my husband into getting a dog. I really want a lab or golden retriever. Your list seems to cover all areas of staying active and healthy as a partnership. I really like your idea of making a joint bucket list for things to do around the state. My husband and I always comment on how we have yet to experience SO MANY things around Oregon that people visit here to see and do. It always seems like the summers are too short to squeeze everything in, but I guess that is better than having too much time. 🙂

Great post!! Although I’ve only been officially married for one month tomorrow, we’ve been together 7 years, and one of the biggest things we do together is garden. Allllllll the time. 🙂

These are some really great tips!! After being in a relationship with someone who didn’t prioritize health or being active, I was amazed at how awesome it is to be with someone who is very active and fit! It’s fun to be able to go for a run together or talk about what workout you did for the day or planning fun active things to do in the future.

I love all of these tips.

My boyfriend and I like to play disc golf, we joined a co-ed softball league, and we like to go fishing. All of these things are stuff that we enjoy doing so it doesn’t seem like an actual workout.

Truckee is adorable! And I love walking my dog as well! As a newlywed myself, my husband and I stay in shape by going to the gym together everyday. There are days when I do’t feel like it, but he is a great motivator – he has such a hot body!
